Is this the part where I get to make a snide comment about what happens when this is cross-posted to Kotaku?

The end of that game is just heart-wrenching.

"Tell me this meant something! That this wasn't all for nothing!"

This game has been out for months so I don't know why they are reviewing it now, but yes, it was awesome. It's worth it to note that Ellie is supposed to be a young girl of about 14 or so. She reminds me of a cross between Arya Stark and Katniss Everdeen what with her bow and arrow skillz. She curses, hunts deer, and saves Joel.

Damn, I really need to get around to playing Last of Us, but it stubbornly refuses to drop in price. Naughty Dog effect at work...

I think the MSM often misses how many great female characters and even leads there are in games, in addition to some great female antagonists (GladOS anyone?). In fact, Naughty Dog has, for the past few years, had some great female characters in games. Moreover, I think it bears noting that as often as Nintendo puts Peach in the position to be rescued, they also often make her into a playable and pretty awesome character.

I'm not denying that there is a heaping load of misogynistic bullshit to be dealt with in gaming (and I've been told off plenty on gaming sites for pointing it out), but I also think that we should be celebrating the good when we can. I'm glad to see stories like this, because I want more women to take part in the industry and in games themselves, as I think the more we show people how it can be a great medium, the more it'll evolve past the CoDbros.

I feel the same way about Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite. She started out as a damsel in distress and became so much more. The relationship she had with Booker was striking and she was an incredibly important character. I'd say she's one of the best and most important female game characters since Lara Croft or Samus from Metroid.

I wish they'd release it for PC, I'd play the shit out of it. I haven't played console games since N64 though :(

I am on Xbox but also use PC for gaming, and I really want to play this! I don't know how long the PS-exclusive thing lasts.

Cool. Cool cool cool. I've been meaning to play this for a while...maybe I'll make it another item on my list of "totally achievable New Year's things." I feel like this isn't the first time I've heard people involved with the game say something intriguing and insightful about storytelling craft.

I don't play video games so I don't know if this is standard, but the animation/details look amazing in those pictures. Would it be that level of detail during game play? Or just for stills?

Even though I don't play video games, I'd totally play this (and die immediately).

The game looks amazing through out. The cut scenes do have a bit higher fidelity, but they're all entirely real-time, in engine. I was honestly surprised how good the game looks on an aging console, and how well it performs. The only draw back to this is the load time when you first boot up the game (it can get up to 5-7 minutes), but that load time means you won't be dealing with it during the game itself.

If you have time, do a quick google search of "Crysis 3," video game graphics have greatly improved in the last few years they look good on consoles and even better on high end computers if the developers make good games for PCs. Also since there are only a few consoles, developers can write "direct to metal" which essentially means they can code directly to the console hardware without an interface getting in the way so they can really get efficient when rendering, etc to achieve a great looking game on an old console.

Unfortunately, she's still the lead "female "character, not the lead character.

There's only two lead characters...so Joel would be the "lead male character". But I hear what you're saying...it's like when dudes say she's my "best female friend"...er, what?
