people were taking drugs and having a lot of fun and having sex with each other

Uhhh, how is that less shallow and oh so different from being a "Botoxed idiot"? She's sounding a little nonsensical and nuts. However, I do miss Britpop too and those idiotic feuds, like the whole Damon Albarn/Justine Frischmann/Brett Anderson love triangle. Good music and good gossip in that era.

Have you read The Last Party by John Harris? It's a great work of pop music social history, but more importantly if you lived in Britain through the 90s the "Oh, so that's what was going on" factor is sky-high.

The being very strung out on heroin and the mediocre 3rd album phases - not so much.

Wait a second. They weren't "having a lot of fun and having sex with each other", but they ostracized her when she "wasn't able to go out and party"? So...which is it?

"it was the days of Britpop when things felt authentic and anarchic and people were taking drugs and having a lot of fun and having sex with each other"

It says they were, not they weren't. So they were doing those things, then they stopped hanging out with her when she could no longer join in as they continued to do those things.

"...I arrived and it was a bunch of sterile fucking Botoxed idiots that stank of desperation." As opposed to the beginning portion which you quoted.

I really like Lilly Allen but I can't help thinking she's one of those people that has a complaint or is unimpressed by everything. The reason I feel that way is because it takes one to know one.

I bet in real life she's exactly as much of a whiner as anyone else you'd meet, but we're not used to celebrities complaining so she really stands out. Celebs are supposed to be grateful all the time.

I find what she has to say interesting because of being from a showbiz family and still having rose coloured glasses when it comes to the fantasy of what being a 'pop star' is meant to be.

On a cultural level she isn't really all that "out there" in terms of British shooting from the hip type talking. There are loads of people over in the UK who say things that are very frank that because they aren't big over in North America - don't get covered. Charlotte Church comes to mind and puts Ms Allen well in the shade. The press over there has its darlings and if you fall out of favour you will get vilified as ungrateful or have your comments presented in a weird context. The gutter press feels a pretty strong sense of entitlement (could be that Public School boy innate training at being entitled) to gaining access to celebrities personal lives - in a way that is hugely more invasive than anything we seen in NA. Until you see it for yourself it is hard to fathom. I was completely gobsmacked when I lived in London because I had never seen anything like it. I am originally from Montreal and celebrities frequently visit the city for F1 and the Jazz Fest and you don't get an insane mobbing or paps running around like lunatics - and natives will tell other people to give the celebrity space if it seems to be getting excessive. I admire a lot of the pop people over in the UK because they are made of pretty stern stuff when you see what is written about them and how the media hounds them. (I know they are wealthy but I don't reckon a lot of them truly know what they have signed on for until it is too late).

True. Seeing paparazzi at airports is a complete eye opener. They are vile.

But I think it is a cultural thing too. British people - especially famous ones - just like to say stuff and have people go "000h controversial". For the last 40 years at least! Yes we do have many people who talk bollocks but maybe other folks should stop hanging onto and analysing their every fucking word (yes - E! News) and treated them like special snowflakes, maybe they will shut the fuck up. See Piers Morgan who has made a living out of saying shit and having Americans pay attention and then he just laughs and goes "there YOU go again". Maybe if people didn't like our accents, nobody would listen to our exported trolls. :)

I think Lily comes out with shit but it should be flushed away with all the other turds.

I used to tell my husband that his accent was panty peeler for North American girls. Sadly, quite true of all of the Isles and the Irish accents. Even Scoucers get a look in, even though no one knows what the hell they are saying half the time over here.

I'm sure most (if not all) people here are aware of this, but just in case you're not, Lily Allen's brother is everyone's favorite salt husband.

I worked in radio/broadcasting and the music industry for 35 years and I can say with a bit of authority that most performers are self-absorbed assholes. You will find that anyone with a singular focus can be less than interesting when you get past the surface.

Yes to the singular focus! They end up undeveloped in all other key areas- like morals, humor, etc. thank you!

I agree. It's even true in non-pop music. I've known several classically trained music prodigies and more of them than I expected were huge self-absorbed assholes. I guess nobody ever tells them "no"?

Truly, it was the golden age of upper-middle-class Camdenite junkies.

Apparently the new album will feature material inspired by her feud with Azealia Banks, which... yeesh. I mean, Banks was well out of order calling Allen's children ugly, but somehow Allen managed to make her look like the better person in that fight, so who knows what the song is going to be like. Also she has a black friend who loved the 'Hard Out Here' video, so there.

I don't mind her but she just comes across as a bit ... gobby and thick? Is that unkind? Sorry Lils if it is. She went to a very posh school and her mum was a film producers so she hardly was unaware of the realities of the super-privileged. Or maybe she was - I dunno. Even so her Mockney ways are jarring at times. I like that she married a really down to earth not-celebrite and their relationship seems real. She followed her heart and you know - I can't hate on her for that. But other than this - I can take her or leave her.

I wonder who she means about her getting pregnant and then turning nasty? Probably Queen Kate and Co. That doesn't surprise me at all.

She's the cuter version of Lena Dunham. Children of privilege who we've been told are special but really, they aren't. At some point their brand of unspecialness grates on everyone and then they just bitch about the industry that loved them at one time. Will happen to Dunham very soon.

I'm sorry but someones gotta say it first. Lily Allen is sort of an asshole. Every time she says something publicly it's so negative and reeks of "I'm so much better than you"
