Here's a cool story: So I'm a freelance writer in New York City. Even though I write for a bunch of places, I make just enough to get by (actually not enough). I also just turned 26, which left me out in the cold for health care.

Through Medicaid expansion, I'm able to get health care. If I get a steady job in the next few months, I'll go on a plan through that, but in the interim, this is so huge for me.

Your mature attitude about possible temporary setbacks should be a model for others your age.

Max, I really have to compliment your commentary once again. As an Old, I have had plenty of time to appraise and understand the forces at work here. It is gratifying to me that, even at the tender age of 26, you have such a nose for the facts and the truth of the debate. As long as journalists like yourself continue to disturb the sleeping public with your insistent reveille, I still hold out hope that we will have single payor health care for all before I die.

Thank you, and good on ya..

"Glitches"? "Disinformation"? I'd say the ones churning the disinformation were the Obama administration initially trying to portray a complete fiasco as a matter of glitches, with the top guy himself receiving the Lie of the Year award from a respected fact checker.

LOL PolitiFact is not a respected fact checker. They routinely have their asses handed to them by Rachel Maddow.

I'm from Idaho, and went to get Medicaid because I had medical needs that have to be met and I lost my job earlier in the year due to a corporate buyout and downsizing.

With a grand total income of $0 dollars a year at that point, they decided that I still didn't qualify for Medicaid and rejected me within 10 minutes of being in that office. Social Safety net my ass...

So, do you feel more motivated than before to get a job? That was the big argument, that you'd rest on your laurels and suck off the government tit. I bet you learned your lesson didn't you?

*rolls eyes* Ugh...there's plenty of that kind of attitude in this red state. But I guess 6 months of sending out resumes and dozens of interviews isn't "bootstrapping" hard enough for my red-blooded conservative Real Americans.

But watching the Oakland Raiders get their asses handed to them on a plate is a hallowed Sunday tradition in the East Bay. Right up there with getting shitfaced on mimosas at brunch while getting stoned.

(Seriously, this is how I spend every Sunday. I have a hard life.)

Do the parts of the website that haven't even been created yet count as glitches?

I used it last night. Worked just fine. Of course, I also found out I don't qualify for the subsidies and my state has screwed me because the Tea Party fistfuckers in the state house refuse to extend Medicaid. Vote the Tea Party Out in 2014.

There are whole sections of the site that don't exist yet. The behind the scenes part where money is sent to the insurance companies being just one of them.

There should be a special place in hell for governors that did not extend Medicaid. I was helping a family member sign up for the federal exchange. This person is a grad student with several part time jobs who just turned 26. He makes so little money, less than $10,000 a year. It's too little to qualify for tax credits, but he also doesn't qualify for Medicaid (because our governor didn't accept the expansion). I also learned that without the expansion, single adults with no children can't get Medicaid in our state! I don't make much money, but it is about three times more than this family member, which makes me eligible for the tax credits. If I needed insurance, I would pay HALF of what this family member will even though he makes so much less than me. I hate my state so so much. I can't believe the governor is screwing over the poor like this.

You can wait. This is just to make sure you have coverage for January. But definitely check in around March to get the ball rolling.

    I did, I did!!!

You know what's so nuts about it? I got almost the identical plan I have now, from my current insurer, but for half the price. What a crooked bunch of fuckers!

I currently pay almost $1200.00 a month to Connecticare as a self employed person. Went on the website, and there was my plan for $645..when last year they swore up and down this was the best they could do and my agent said it was "competitive with the current market"!

Now I'm waiting to see if they let me proceed..the website said it was a go. If they don't, there are other similar plans in the $600 range and I'll do one of those.

These companies are SO fucked up and sleazy..I hope this new system causes some oversight.

Open enrollment deadlines are March 2014. Sorry, wasn't paying attention. Today is the last day to sign up assuming you want coverage to start Jan 1

In other news i get the impression that there are going to be a ton of people without healthcare due to just sheer confusion and the pains of transitioning.

Just a note about the programs: Medicare is primarily for the retired. Medicaid is the primarily federally-funded, state-administered health insurance program for the poor.
