I'm sad none of Sam Biddle's work was featured. I thought his work covering the tension between Silicon Valley workers and San Francisco residents was really good stuff.

Can we have a post with the best Jim Cooke illustrations/gifs of the year? That guy's amazing.

I will always worship John Cook for getting the Rob Ford scandal started.

I think Rob Ford is responsible for the Rob Ford scandal. Cook just discovered the talent.

Are we going to have a Best of the Gawker Commentariat for 2013 next? Not that I think I have a shot at it; I try to be at least reasonably intelligent and/or clever enough to break out of the dreaded gray area, and yet the most successful thing I posted all year (by the hundred or so recommendations it got) was this:

Perhaps the commentariat is meant to compile this list ourselves. I mean, they did build kinja for us and we did continue to come...

An honorable mention for Nitasha Tiku's Circle Jerks: Why Do Editors Love Dave Eggers? She's a pretty amazeballs writer.

And I really wish for a resurrection of HamNo's I of the Tyger series in 2014. Loved, loved, loved those posts.

Lots of great stuff on the list, but Camille Dodero's piece on Sammie Eaglebear Chavez was my favorite of the year. Fantastic reporting on a heartbreaking case.

Camille you set the bar high, readers expect great things from you in 2014.

I'd like to second that sentiment. Well done, Camille.

As I understand it, Camille is actually heading out for greener pastures. Which sucks because now I will have to find her stuff all over again. Maybe I'll set up a Google Alert or something.

The Boston Bombing article marked a watershed for me this year. While some previous alt news coverage was always sure to be found on GMN before other sources, this was the first time that I watched this site before all other sources to get the real story.

I tend to be a gourmand of all things internet, but Gawker has matured to the point that it can be relied upon as a window into our contemporary Zeitgeist.

Amazingly, I am in love with Will Sheff and have sat through some tedious stuff just to see him in human person. And I am always checking Gawker but I had no idea that post of his even existed. How? I also love Nitasha Tiku and had never read her clit post. Thank God/Baby New Year/Old Man Time for end of year recaps!

The one that surprised me when it came out was the Ken Layne piece on the death of his dog, Hunter.

Before that piece, everything he'd written on the site seemed mean-spirited. After reading it, I've gone back and read previous posts with a fresh perspective.

It also showed how soft many of our commenters are when it comes to pets. It was sublime, and even now reading it will bring unwanted sniffling.

Best written piece this year? Maybe not, but one of the best for me personally.

'On Smarm' wins. 'On Smarm' is the greatest thing ever written on this site. Every other Gawker writer should be ashamed of themselves. (Yes, even the ones I like.)

On another note, I just realized that John Cook and Jim Cook are two different people.

On Smarm was one of the best takedowns I've ever read. Easily the best of 2013. Tom Scocca owns.
