"The United States believes that terror groups have been able to make inroads in Venezuela since Venezuela stopped cooperating with the United States on anti-terrorism operations."

Come on Max Rivlin-Nadler, you really gonna print some shit like this without even a courtesy "anonymous US government officials believe"? Did the writing staff of Homeland season 3 take over Gawker or something?

Agreed. Asserting claims by the United States Government, which lies all the fucking time, is irresponsible. Associating Venezuela with Terrorist Threats because they don't cooperate with our spy agencies (and why would they - considering the recent NSA revelations) is total bullshit.

Literally in the next paragraph of the article. "the State Department in its most-recent assessment of terrorist threats in the Western Hemisphere said that there are no known operational cells currently in the region."

"Venezuela and French officials believed that a terrorist group had planted a bomb on the aircraft and planned on detonating it while the flight was in midair."
Can you even read in doing your stenography, or does everything go through the Gawker hysteria filter? It doesn't say they believe the bomb had been planted, just that they had heard a group was trying to do so. Considering how often these tips and threats do not pan out, there is a difference.

Oh, how I wish for the days when only pilot strikes grounded Air France flights.

Don't know whether the rules have changed, but back-in-the-day if there was a bomb threat the FAA required that the flight be grounded for the length of the scheduled flight time, notwithstanding whether an explosive device was ever found on board.

I have fond memories of the Maiquetia terminal. As a child I would sneak in and out of the "secure" area, and nobody would blink an eye!

France has been taking more active and aggressive posture with respect to foreign policy lately, so it would stand to reason that they'd find themselves subject to increased terror threats.

French troops recently intervened in Mali to liberate the population from radical Jihadists, and they've recently taken casualties in the Central African Republic as they're again exercising military force ostensibly in the defense of the people.

In other words, they're bringing pressure to bear against radical Islamists and the likelihood of French intelligence uncovering a bomb plot under these circumstances seems pretty high to me.

There are federal notices on every plane stating that Venezuelan origin flights are unsafe. At least on every delta plane I have been on in the past month.

Whether one believes the us govt and French-ally govt, or cries 'bullshit' regarding all communications surrounding Venezuela these days, really depends on how much one believes about this 'war on terror'. I just don't think a bunch of Arabs are sitting in Caracas planning on how to blow up a bunch of Venezuelan and French nationals. And I can almost guarantee there aren't some crazy anti-regime extremists in Venezuela (that's anti current Venezuelan regime, however they are called post-Chavez) itching to blow up a flight full of civilians either.

Call me crazy, call me a naive idiot, but I don't believe it.
