He was so incredibly gorgeous. And elegant. And dirty sexy British. Literally a dying breed of man.

Whoa. I would like a threeway with both O'Toole's and Cillian Murphy's eyes, please.

One of my first crushes. Must have been 5 or so. Never got over it. The crush just got worse as I got older. So gorgeous, so incredibly talented. Such a naughty boy.

      Spectacular.

Henry: I hope we never die.

      Eleanor: So do I.

Henry: Do you think there's any chance of it?

I think my favorite line, which I repeat during this time of year to the point of absurdity, is Hepburn's "Well, what shall we hang? The holly, or each other?"

And then, out of no where, my Facebook live feed has become a spam-like tribute to classic films! I had no idea my friends were such film afficiandos and lives were directly touched for the better by Peter O'Toole!

It's sad he died but seriously Facebook effigies to every celebrity that dies?!?! Someone, aged 25, actually said that Lawrence of Arabia specifically O'Toole's performance changed their life. How? In what universe? The same people said the same shit about Paul Walker a week ago? O NOES I AM SO SAD PAUL WALKER DIED HIS PERFORMANCE IN 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS WAS A GAME CHANGER FOR ME!!!!

Seriously, I'm sad when people die, but it's getting to a point when celebrities die everyone's woe and outcry on the internet is just like a vapid echo chamber of pop culture bullshit.

The thing with celebrities is that we "grow up" with them. Pop culture shapes us.

So when someone like Paul Walker dies...its kind of like a part of OUR youth dies - for many he was a teenage crush.

Peter O'Toole is quite iconic. So while it might seem a little ridiculous and it is, these people although having no physical contact with our world - we have a sort of emotional bond with them.

Does this make sense? This is what I've deducted at least...

I get what you're saying. When Lou Reed died, I was super bummed. I listened to all his albums, commiserated with my fellow gawkers about what a bummer it was and stuff and left it at that.

The people I am talking about, specifically, are hysterically mourning the death of every famous person who dies. Sure, I can believe that someone who had a huge crush on Paul Walker as a teen would be upset by his untimely passing. Or I can believe that a film buff would genuinely be saddened by the passing of Peter O'Toole. And Nelson Mandela, the world should mourn his passing, he was a great man.

But to say that every famous person's death somehow has a profound impact on your life is fucking ridiculous and over the top and has become a really hollow trend on the internets. I grew up listening to the Velvet Underground, but did the world end when Lou Reed took one last walk on the wild side? No, of course not.

O'Toole was one of my favorites. And like his co-star and friend Omar Sharif, beauty/sex-symboldom in youth, and joie de vivre [70s polite for hard partying] in middle age, actually led to some remarkable and subtle late-career performances.

Still, My Favorite Year is such a treasure for that rare pitch-perfect casting (50ish O'Toole, who looked 60+, playing 50ish year old Errol Flynn in his late-dissipation state). The best part is that in spite of it all, O'Toole got 30 years longer to live than Flynn did.

I'm glad someone mentioned "My Favorite Year", because I thought it was a great little movie, for what it was. I've always felt so bad for Mark Linn Baker's career following that auspicious career.

As for O'Toole himself, he was magnificent. The best line, which his character utters aghast after discovering he'll be appearing on LIVE television, went something like "I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star"

      Officer: It damn well 'urts!

      T.E. Lawrence: Certainly it hurts.

      Officer: What's the trick then?

T.E. Lawrence: The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts.

Somebody joked that after Leo's Oscar-less career is over, someone will make a biopic about DiCaprio and the star will, of course, win the award.
