It's South Africa, people. They are a third world country that developed a flame-thrower anti-carjacking security system due to their high capital crime rates and something like this surprises us? Jacob Zuma told his people that AIDS can be cured by taking a shower. So for this translator to not know what the fuck he's doing doesn't seem like a stretch (if South African and further learning of his past crimes only proves the point that South Africa (its government and society, that is) are still relatively unsophisticated.

Furthermore, South Africa is such a crime-riddled country that anyone relying on security uses private firms like Mamba, not the government.

I'm not South African, but I've done a lot of research about South Africa because my best friend is born and raised in Durban (I like to be informed about the backgrounds of the people I know) and we've had extensive talks about his country. My understanding from independent research and filtered through a South African (with his own perspective, but he is a native) helped me better understand the issues that plague that country.

Developing might be closer to what you're trying to say, but even then, it's actually among the advanced economies or newly industialized counties. But then again, you were just trying to be hateful and dismissive, right? I'm not even a native defending it; I'm a citizen of the United States, but these things matter.

Can someone please explain how he is a "fake" sign language interpreter? To me, that makes it seem like he was making up the signs. But if that is the case, how did he even manage to get the gig? Like, what kind of vetting process did he have to go through, and not even considering his criminal background, how did he get the ok to be up on that stage if he has no idea what he is doing?

  There is video of him signing at other events over the past couple of years, but I haven't seen any news outlet show those videos to a person who knows sign language to see if they were fake too, or if he really knew what he was doing in some past engagements. If the others were examples of the same "fake signing," then that shoots down his "I was hallucinating" excuse right there (unless he tries to claim that he was hallucinating during all these past gigs?).
  
  By the way, I've found a video of him signing at a 2011 funeral — an event which he himself told an interviewer proved he knew what he was doing. I sent it to Gawker and they post it and ask any experts out there if he was really doing it right in that video or "fake signing" again. I'm really curious to know.
