Max Headroom was also the New Coke spokesman after Coca-Cola Classic was made, he was a sadly ubitiuous presence in the mid to late '8os.

As for the clip, oddly eerie and it would have been watching it live. Looks like the hacker didn't have too much to say which makes it that much worse.

Max was definitely an 80's icon. The best part was that he wasn't computer-generated at all, his twitches were simple video edits.

I just feel desperately sad that he needs to include a note explaining who Max Headroom is. And now I'll roll up my mummy wrappings and crawl back into the crypt...

Um, Max Headroom was more than a VJ. You don't even need to go 20 minutes into the future to find that out either.

Seriously though, check out the show. It's pretty good. Easily the best "cyberpunk" TV show of the 80s.

Not only do I still have fond memories of watching Max Headroom, whenever I've seen Matt Frewer in anything, he's Max Headroom to me.

I met Matt Frewer on the Max Headroom set when I was a kid, and he did the st-t-t-tutter when he shook my hand and introduced himself!

I think the context of this is lost today.

During this time, the boundaries of censorship and what was acceptable on TV were being challenged. Local PBS and public access stations opened the door to 'us'. The stuff I got to watch on local our local San Francisco PBS stations was awesome! There was a video show that regularly featured the Residents and showed an 'underground scene' that blew my tiny suburban mind. Then this guy/guys/whoever goes and hijacks a 'real' station...woah. It was huge and it made me think they were like something out of a comic book. They took over a TV station!

I remember weird public access shows on UHF (fuck, I'm so old, I remember when you had to tune in TV stations like a radio) that would play the Residents, Laurie Anderson, Nina Hagen, Can, just crazy shit for an 80s kid raised on 70s rock. I needed that crazy shit in me, right that second. I couldn't just jump on the internet, I had to go to seedy record stores to find LPs and dig through bins of albums, and spend hours talking music with people to find new shit I would like. I would give up all this modern connected world and my ability to buy beer in a second to go back to 1985 and be teenaged fuck machine with a fat goth girlfriend and a great record collection.

It's kind of punk, the way he gives the New Coke slogan while holding a Pepsi can.

Interrupting a Tom Baker/Leela episode?? Unforgivable.

And here my holly shit moment for the day. After reading the artificial I finally had a click in my brain...I may have known J and K back in the day, I remember talking to two bothers at a hellpit gatherings...barging about things like the VCL and one of them hinting that they did something bigger, more impact full, more real. supposedly they live near their old parents house...I may need to look them up and ask

This looks like a deleted scene from Videodrome.
