      A modest proposal: Mandatory Ativan injections prior to flying. You won't mind about the screaming babies and shitty $16 personal pizzas, and the terrorists will be too fuzzy and happy to do any terrorist-y stuff.

          Wait wait wait. "Fully-functional break-action shotgun?" Did anybody actually watch the video? That "gun" went off after a very long "fuse" and then completely exploded.

          That is not exactly functional.

          Also, since lithium metal is doing the heavy lifting, isn't the issue really that they need a better way to detect lithium metal? Did I miss the part where he actually purchases the lithium metal at the airport?

            Actually, it's sitting right here on my desk — fully functional. :)

            Also, I think you might be missing the point.... a lot.

            I think its more of a directional bomb than a "shotgun" given that the entire thing appears to be a one shot wonder. Also, I am curious what this does to an armored cockpit door...

            I think the point here is that he's showing something dangerous, however I don't think what he's saying he's created lines up with what he did create.

            This is going to sound snarky but it's really not meant that way.

            It was only able to propel a quarter to 260fps i.e. 177MPH which is about 2+ times slower than the plane is actually flying at.... pointed at a person it would hurt like hell and possibly penetrate skin but I don't think the "blunderbuss terrorism weapon" is too much of an issue at best case you've randomly hurt one person and it won't be penetrating the aircraft (even if it did a quarter size hole in a passenger window wouldn't take out a plane).

            Quarter weights 0.00567 kilograms

            260fps == 80 meters/sec

            .5 * 0.00567 * 260 ^ 2 = 18.1 joules of energy

            100 joules is general number used in minimum energy for a bullet to be considered deadly. Heck a tiny airsoft pellet which has much less surface area then the edge of a quarter requires over 3 joules to break skin. I don't think this would even be able to make a quarter penetrate half way through flesh. Now I wouldn't want to be hit by it but I don't think it would be seriously life threatening to anybody (outside of freak method, stuck into temple or artery) .

            The others are even less deadly... barely penetrating skin, basically a flash bomb that wouldn't do damage and a remote detonator that a cellphone would take much less work to use. And the whole smashing coconuts thing??? Well having watched a guy repeatedly do it with his bare hands not too concerned.

            It's a fun playing MacGuyver type thing but no terrorist would be able to really use this (other than possibly as a flashbomb) so quit freaking out about TSA taking away stuff.

              The 9/11 terrorists got an extremely ambitious job done with nothing but craft knives, fanaticism and teamwork. There is just no stopping folks when they get a terror-on.
