It must be tough. SO tough. But knowing that someone loves you and will be there must make it easier.

I'm not the type to make a "right in the feels!" type comment normally, but the quote from Gray actually made me tear up.

It's wonderful the judge ruled this way, but I just wish these two weren't in a situation where they even needed him to. So fucking tragic.

This is why gay marriage needed to be legalized. There are often spousal benefits available that are not to domestic partners. I hope to see more of this in the future.

This, absolutely. It's as though we did away with "separate but equal but not actually equal" years ago.

I've had some friends and, at a time, even my girlfriend, who didn't understand what the "hubub" was about, why domestic partnerships "weren't enough" and they wanted marriage too. I just laugh and say "Yeah, because 'separate but equal' has been soooooo fair in the past, right?"

Vernita and Pat are such incredible activists and huge figures in the Chicago LGBTQ community! Vernita started the first gay and lesbian hotline in the country in 1969 and has been doing amazing work ever since. Plus the Cook County Clerk David Orr (who is himself the nicest guy ever) is hand delivering the license to them. Also, I am definitely not crying there is just a lot of dust in my office today.

I don't understand the long wait between passing this laws and enacting them besides paperwork.

Only way the senate republicans would agree to it. After all, it's an election year for some.

Not exactly. The Illinois constitution, Article IV:

"A bill passed after May 31 shall not become effective prior to June1 of the next calendar year unless the General Assembly by the vote of three-fifths of the members elected to each house provides for an earlier effective date."

The House didn't have enough votes to override this provision.

Honest question: what difference does it make that they are able to get a marriage license instead of a civil union (which has been legal in IL for several years now)?

Social security benefits and protection from inheritance taxes are both federal and both a big fucking deal financially for couples.

Oh, duh, I forgot that whole part where DOMA was partially overturned. Mea culpa, nothing to see here.

Okay, I'm crying. It's both happy and sad. The judge is great. Cancer sucks. Cancer sucks mighty wads.
