I'm starting to really hate the holidays here. Every single Thanksgiving and Christmas now, it seems like I have to drive through some "Storm of the Century" down the mid-Atlantic. I am getting increasingly tempted to just move to Hawaii and never look back.

Yes, and here's the list of fatalities from those hurricanes in Hawaii since 1949:

      NameYearNumber of deaths
      Iniki19926
      Estelle19862
      Uleki19882
      Hiki19501
      Iwa19821

We get more deaths than that annually just driving on these shitty, storm battered roads here.

Okay, that's all well and good, but what I want to know is when the coffee-table book of Jim Cooke's images for Gawker articles is coming out. Because I would buy it.

[ETA] Oh, maybe that makes it seem like I am dissing the article. I am not! This was just my first response to seeing the illustration. I <3 Jim Cooke.

But there's no way to put this into book form:

This is why I'm traveling Thursday morning instead. I'm sure everything will be JUST FINE by then, and not crowded or busy at ALL...

I flew on Thanksgiving last year and it was AMAZING. The airport was practically deserted, and there were like five people total on the plane. I got to sprawl out across a row of seats and nap for five hours.

Christmas day is the best for flying. I've done it a few times and have always been glad I did.

Caity I don't know where you live, but dear god, if you can avoid Valley Forge and take 309, do it.

Holidays alone are the best. You have carte blanche to be as lazy as you please without the guilt that comes with wasting a weekend. Everything is closed, can't run errands, why bother putting on pants? Just curl up on the couch with Netflix and hot beverage of choice. Sleep a lot. No family fights. No one asking while they pass the potatoes if you've finally found a boyfriend or a new job or whatever. Bliss.

Subaru Foresters have All Wheel Drive and are not the cars you will see breakdancing across I-90 this holiday season.

          Sincerely,

Most of this is also a handy guide to surviving any ole work day.
