I will always remember the first time I read "In the Name of the Rose". It was like someone finally saw the truth of how fascinating the middle ages were.

I've lost track of how many times I've read that book. And Foucault's Pendulum is why I majored in history. And still watch National Treasure and read stupid books about the Templars.

Uh, if you are an anthropologist or historian. It was probably hell to live then. Even for the rich, tho of course less.

Everybody should take this opportunity to read "If on a winter's night a traveler" and be amazed at how a novel can be infuriating in all the best ways. Such a great book and such a deft translation.

I still remember reading and enjoying "If On A Winter's Night A Traveler" in high school. One of the first books my young mind encountered that deviated from the norm of what I thought a novel should be.

So thank you for making it possible for me to read it, Mr. Weaver! RIP.

I'd be happier with: "Midway through our meal of pasta with lemon and cream sauce, Ted Cruz walked in with a basketful of little pieces of smoldering Tea Party membership documents[.]"

If On a Winter's Night a Traveler is my favorite book. The Name of the Rose is my least favorite Christian Slater movie.

Calvino is great, but this would also be a good time to remember some of the lesser-known authors Weaver helped bring to the English language. My favorites: "Boredom" by Alberto Moravia, "That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana" by Carlo Gadda, and "A Man" by Oriana Fallaci, which is probably on your parents' bookshelves right next to The Prophet and Be Here Now.
