I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I feel like publicly calling someone you're friends with a jackass is a real dick move. If my friend is being a jackass, I pull them aside so I don't embarrass them in front of people. But on the other hand, his action was completely public as well, so it's hard.

I still lean on the side of "don't call friends jackasses in public" though.

Except that Kanye has never been Obama's friend. Even Kanye said that Obama was around him to make him look 'cool'. It was just politics. It's like when ScarJo told everyone Obama and her email each other, implying they're all buddy-buddy, and he shut that right down.

I think for me the defining shift away from "take it up in private" is not that it was public, but that it publicly involved another person. If Kanye had just pulled, I don't know, a Sean Penn off topic speechifying about war or whatever when he should have been presenting an award, that would be one thing. But that ain't what he did, so. Yeah, I'm all for the public tsking.

I think West is intelligent. I think he is talented (and I don't even like his music, but yes, I appreciate his talent). I also think that, indeed, he is a jackass. A jackass who says lots and lots of jackassy things. I don't care how he feels about the President, though. I'm sure he's been called worse by "friends".

Yes and as talented as he is, his "issues" are wearing me out and I can no longer give an F. It was a hot mic man, put on your big boy leather drawers for goodness sakes. So what Jay and Bey's slept in Lincoln's bedroom - get over it.

Bonus, I think he also reiterates his claim that Kim is more influential than Michelle O and that Obama "needs to get him and Kim's name out his mouth.". There are so many flavors of wrong in that interview that I can't anymore with him.

Exactly, I'm sick and tired of people defending this douchebag and giving his bullshit media attention! Thats the only reason he is doing this shit. As long as the media is paying attention he will keep acting like this. Dear Jez, Kanye and Kim are both assholes, stop giving them what they want.

Oh, Kanye. Kanye, Kanye, Kanye. Everyone knows the best way to deal with breakups is to go to Taco Bell and get all of the cheap stuff and park your car in a parking lot and cry-eat to the best soft rock hits from the 80's, 90's and today.

On some real levels, though, that is some really great commentary, Lindy. Everyone wants to jump on Kanye's dick all the time and it gets so old.

There was a very unpleasant racist undercurrent in so much of the dialogue following that "Imma let you finish" moment. The fact that Obama was even asked to comment about it makes me go :/ Can you even imagine the racist bullshit backlash the president would have gotten if he hadn't said something unequivocally condemning like "he's a jackass"?

I'm confused - is this a NEW fraud claim for Joe and Teresa Giudice - or the same one and now they've just been formally indicted?

The problem was, Kanye was a jackass. Yes, he–and many others–have legit critiques of the Grammys. Taking it out on Taylor Swift, though, and putting her in that situation (because really, WTF is a young girl supposed to do), was a jackass move. (And yeah, I'd argue that expecting an 18-year-old girl to know how to handle herself in that situation is asking too much.)

Kanye acted like a jackass in public because it was something he believed in enough to trample all over someone else's win and moment–not the people giving the awards, but the person receiving an award–and is acting like a child (still!) over the fact that people are holding him accountable to being an ass in public.

If he didn't want those repercussions, he could have done many other things.

And frankly, his "I'm so important" schtick is tiring. "I care about thoughts and how you helping people and what you bring to the world." I'm the first to say I think Obama shouldn't have gotten a Peace Prize and I see that much as I do this years: aspirational rather than retrospective. But even that acknowledgement aside, it seems like, on the whole, Obama's done a lot to create a net gain of positive than Kanye.

Also, it's possible that Kanye reminds me of the spoiled rich kids I occasionally had to grit my teeth through teaching, and I am utterly biased because of that. :D

Plus, he made the comment during the in between moments of an interview and probably didn't think it would become a big thing.

Kanye is both 100% right and a total jackass. It was an off handed comment the president made while getting make up done. Kanye, you own your jackassness or did I miss interpret the line, "here's one for the douchebags?"

Why is there a long paragraph about the Grammys? This happened at the VMAs, making Kanye's rant even stupider.

Right? It's one like interrupting someone at the Teen Choice awards:

"Imma let you finish, but Beyonce deserved that surfboard more!"

Was going to say the same thing. He's done nothing at the Grammy's to stand up for black musicians. He had a hissy fit at MTV and the music awards a couple of times. Those awards are more about pop culture and having some sort of meaningless controversy occur at the show, so his message seemed more like another staged shit show than thoughtful commentary. You're right about how his rant appeared.

I don't care about any thing around this "feud" because really, fuck Kanye, I love Obama. But let's ask a real question here, so if Kanye CARES about how someone is helping people or bringing something to the world, what the fuck is he doing in these two areas? I honest to God want to know, because all I see is him walking around giving Miley slippers and wearing confederate flag jackets—

I do not like this. I do not think the President should be publicly calling anyone a jackass. Sorry.

Why are some of the recent evening Dirt Bags not being tagged as "Dirt Bag"?...for example, if I hadn't cared so much about Kanye's relationship with Obama, I would have never clicked on the link and I would have been waiting, wondering for the next few hours where the DB was!

I only clicked because it was Lindy, and I am bored, and I figured Lindy could make Kanye's tiresome preening seem interesting. But I need my labels to navigate Jezebelville.
