      It might have worked, if we'd have done it before Al Qaeda came to power in Syria. Prior to that, the Syrian revolution could have been run by a pro-democracy secular faction, had we stepped in to prop them up.

      Instead, we bided our time, and now neither side is really worth helping.

      See we managed to get "linked" and "affiliated" both to preface "al Qaeda", throw in a "ties to" and we have the conspiratorial hat-trick of vaguely associating unrelated groups and concepts to fit a desired narrative.

      Incidentally, I'm curious how one has links to an ideology? Why not just call them "Islamist Militants" and be on our way, why is the loaded "al Qaeda" modifier - a label designed to conflate an ideology and an actual group of people that died out 12 years ago (and, thus, lumping any and all Muslim Bad Guys with 9/11) - still used by any thinking person?
