Fuck everyone who goes to this kind of sale. Honestly fuck everyone who participates in any kind of retail on Black Friday. You all suck and your consumer addiction is sad and pathetic. Signed, former retail worker. P.S. Every person working at the stores you go to hates you and wishes you would drop dead.

Not true. I used to love working the Friday after Thanksgiving at Toys R Us. It was a busy day, but the hours went fast, and the people were in pretty good spirits. Always enjoyed it. Especially the people at the front of the line who were waiting there when I got to work. They were a lot of fun. Never had any problems.

You are probably a truly nice and patient person, and I'm glad you never got burned out or experienced horrible customers during that time. Not sure when you were working but it sucked enough for me in 2008 having to do the 5 am to 2 pm shift on Black Friday after crazy traveling to see family the day before. I can't even imagine if my asshole midget GameStop manager had tried to tell me I had to work ON THANKSGIVING, let alone consider an overnight shift. Then again GameStop is one of the retailers with the absolute worst offerings on Black Friday because MSRP dictates keeping most new-product prices pretty standard. Sure you can get a bunch of shitty 2-year old used games for 80% off but it really just benefits from other mall store offerings on Black Friday.

For everyone who plans on travelling or shopping on holidays- if you go somewhere and are served by a person in a low-wage industry, make sure you tip and tip well. Seriously- my husband went to Tim Hortons on Canadian Thanksgiving, and I made him tip $5 for a $3 drink.

I've actually had people tell me they love to leave me a tip but they just spent all their money on Christmas gifts. Or they're about to go shopping. Fuck you very much.

Vote with your wallet, people. Stay home and enjoy the holiday with your family, so that hopefully these shitty businesses won't think it's a good idea to do this to their employees next year.

Our family stopped doing the whole gift-exchange thing about 10 years ago, and I would never go back. We still do something nice for the little tykes (last year my partner made all the kids little wooden boats to race, this year we're doing art supplies to keep them occupied during the holiday visits) but we spend our money instead on food and good wine to stay home and share, instead of shopping. Less stress, less waste, and more time with the fam.

For all we hear about the supposed War on Christmas, we hear far less about Christmas's War on Thanksgiving.

I was really just asking an unanswerable question - How much stuff bought on Black Friday is actually needed?

One of the great things about these kinds of stories is that it allows so many of those commenting to pretend that if they're actually going to be doing something on Thanksgiving, they won't be among those itching to get away.

Um. So you really think that everybody wants to go shopping Thanksgiving weekend? Personally, I want to sit around with my family, eat too much yummy food, drink wine, and relax with my kids. No pretending here.

I think that if people want to go shopping, they can go shopping. When I'm at home with my kids, it's not at the top of my list, but if we've traveled to either my wife's or my parents, I'm usually looking for an excuse. This was even more so before we had kids.

Why not just start the Black Friday sales on Wednesday? The starting line is gone. And since all these stores are now open on Thursday and Friday - does anyone have a real holiday weekend?

You know what you people are getting from me? A big box of love. Don't use it all in one sitting.

Fuck your big box of love. I want a big screen TV, asshole. This year I'm going to do it right. I always go for the TVs first, but not this year - I'm headed directly for the machete aisle and going directly to the TVs just after that.

They're going to have to rename it Red Friday.

The mall that my wife works at is doing the whole 8pm on Thanksgiving thing. We are, as expected, pretty fit-to-be-tied over the whole business. It was midnight last year . . . but this year one of the big "foundation" stores like Macy's or Penny's decided to open at 8pm on Thanksgiving, so the entire mall has to follow suit. The list of full days off that we get to spend together are far and few between due to the ways that her retail schedule clashes with my standard mon-fri 8-5 job. To have days like Thanksgiving, which used to be considered a given, taken away from us cuts pretty deep. Assholes HAVE to shop - and she HAS to take the hours she's given so that we can, you know, pay bills and buys groceries. It's a shame.

Yeah, a friend of mine owns a small, upscale home store in a mall where Macy's and Penny's are the anchor stores. Their customers aren't going to be coming out to shop in the middle of the night, but they would be in violation of their lease if they didn't open. So, it's going to be mostly a bust, but she is basically going to have to miss Thanksgiving because she's going to have to work all night (she gave her employees the night off so that they didn't have to come in). So, so, so, so stupid.

I'm so sorry. A bunch of my relatives work at big-box stores, and, every year, I've noticed the family Thanksgiving celebration gets smaller and smaller because people have to work. I can remember several years ago when our house was full of family, and now, we've barely got a full house for "Thanksgiving brunch" at 11 am because people need to travel across town to get to work by late afternoon.
