I really, really want to believe that society is changing for the better, and that the fact that stories like this are finally making international news is proof that, as a whole, we accept institutionalized misogyny less and less. There has to be a bright side to all of these stories (Rehtaeh Parsons, Steubenville, Maryville, etc) coming to light.

If there isn't, I don't know if I want to continue getting out of bed in the mornings.

That's what I keep telling myself. It's not that the world is getting worse, these things have always happened. But now, at least, we're talking about it. It's a start. And that's about as glass-half-full as I can get. :/

I suggest a body pillow and a heated blanket so that you can at least be warm and comfortable while you hide from this shitty, shitty world.

Seriously, I don't see these guys being jailed and if they are I don't see it being for long. There are always people who are unaware, and beyond that there are always people willing to cut them a break. Look at Karla Homolka, aside from being a huge fail of the justice system, she now has a husband and children.

Did the right thing because he pulled the guys off her while they were raping her? Umm. No. You're supposed to do something BEFORE the rape starts, asswipe. Banging my head on the wall.

Yeah, you can't help lure the girl into a secluded place, help get her drunk or incapacitated, help get her clothes off, and then pull someone off when she protests and call yourself a good person. Not to mention, when did he have this alleged attack of conscience? No doubt he helped engineer the rape of girls, and raped them, before and after this one, but they were too incapacitated or frightened to put up enough of the struggle for him. Ugh. What a disgusting human being, and what a disgusting world we live in where his family and society defends his actions and paints him as some kind of hero.

His family is adamant he did the right thing and fronted up to police on realising the sex had gone too far.

I can think of nothing more heroic than deciding you maybe shouldn't have raped someone.

    Brave Sir Robin ran away.
    Bravely ran away away.
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
    And gallantly he chickened out.

    Bravely taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!

I thought it too. Uh, and I also read "Anthony Ray Parker" and immediately started humming the Ghostbusters theme song. Fill in your own "I ain't 'fraid o' no [cops/prosecutors/judges]" line here.

This is horror, it is just outrageous that nothing is happening to these guys. Is New Zealand really worse than the US? Because at least when things get this bad something does tend to happen in the US. At least lately.

I have a horrible feeling that these things happen far more often in the US and we just don't hear about it. Some are cases breaking through and getting press but I'm afraid it's much more common than we realize and most girls just keep quiet out of shame and fear.

Question. When something fucked up happens in the US, how do you feel about people asking "Is the US really fucked up? Because that never happens here." (for example, wrongful executions.) Because I've seen how that pans out and usually the Americans on the receiving end of this assumption get really pissed and request that we consider that maybe we shouldn't judge the entire country based on a piece of information about it. I agree with them and believe this applies to other countries too.

The issue of rape prevention education in schools has been raised. Our prime minister immediately enthusiastically promoted the idea and was shocked to hear that consent isn't thoroughly discussed already... No, wait, that's not actually what happened at all. That's sex ed, and it's a Very Delicate Issue, and parents might get their noses out of joint if schools were encouraging kids to make sure their sexual partners actually wanted to BE sexual partners, so, you know, it's a Sensitive Area, and we'll have to "feel our way through it".

    Shit.

Sadly it still sounds more progressive than a majority of America. Where sex education is banned in high school because it'll encourage teenagers to have sex. Like they need encouragement.

And we can't even talk about effective rape prevention in college. The world is a messed up place.

Consent needs to be taught in schools. 100%. Until it becomes obnoxious and no one can even think of confusing what consent is and is not. If I ever become an aunt (or god forbid have children) I will raise hell over this.

"...the sex had gone too far."

The sex. There was no MOTHERFREAKING sex! Is a roasting pig ever cited as a participant at dinner? NO!!!!!! "the sex" is the most generous term you can give this act of savagery!!!!!

Why do I do this to myself? Every time I read anything related to this topic, I turn into an emotional spaz where I go through (and often physically express) all stages of grief in a matter of 90 seconds. Every.single.time.

I'm glad you did, because I'm going to use your brilliant analogy whenever I hear anyone half-assedly and falsely defining the weapon used in this crime and then trying to substitute it for the crime itself.

Now, do I have to pay you royalties, or is it OK if I just credit you at the time?

I am glad that my message may reach past the Kinjaverse, but no crediting required. It's a little depressing to think that we have to damn near use cannibalism to illustrate the assault on humanity that rape is. I'm starting to be persuaded that there is some fault in my assuming that not-being-a-rapist is the de facto existence.
