    The important thing to remember is that your only connection to this story is that you were just one of the outlets this guy contacted in order to sell his tape. In response, you tried to milk it for publicity (and your readers for money Denton could have easily paid instead) only to end up with a $200k pie in your face.

      Actually, the more important thing to remember is that Cook and company were extremely eager to fill the pockets of a gang member who is nearly guaranteed to be at least partially responsible and connected to murder, rape, and other violent crime. There's a story about the US gun epidemic here every other day, and they want to hand over six figures to the people responsible for bringing large scale gun crime and gun running to Toronto. For no reason other than shits and giggles and hits. There was nothing ethical about anything about this, and the Toronto police have already attacked Gawker and The Star for wrecking ongoing investigations into Rob Ford that were taking place before New York based tabloid reporters got involved in Toronto's business. Stay on your side of the border, Gawker.

      Don't worry, I'm well aware that two-hundred freaking thousand dollars went to charity only as a face-saving effort after it didn't yield a video of someone smoking crack. I'd like Hamilton Nolan to write a fucking rant about that. (Seriously, HamNo, I love you, do it.) It's just that Cook's deluded ego, thinking he actually had something "journalismismy" to do with this story, has erupted in such a cum geyser these last few days that I pity the janitor who has to clean his office.
