Seconded. The fact that anybody is defending these guys is bad enough. Then, just to make things worse, the epic victim-blaming by the police and a lot of commentators is beyond awful. HULK SMASH.

I have the opposite reaction, which is just... nothing. I am beyond horrified and disgusted that this shit is happening in the world, in 2013 and that the perpetrators are just so cavalier about it. I can't feel ANYTHING. Just... ugh. My brain just shuts off. And that, I think, is even worse than the Loki-bouncing rage.

"Anonymous tweeted about the boys yesterday along with the hashtag #RoastRapists. Ominous."

If the NZ police can't be bothered to step up?

Yeah, all of these cases of "rape that didn't matter until the newsmedia picked it up" are really eroding my discomfort with vigilante justice. I know that vigilante stuff has the potential to go to really bad places, that the wrong people can be targeted, that mob mentality can get really scary.

And yet... I can't see how things like this change otherwise. The legislative system doesn't seem all that helpful - it's slow, AND the laws are already in place. The problem is in the implementation. And how do we get people to think differently if there aren't consequences for just keeping on?

To every dickbag who defends these guys:

If you don't get a coherent, sober, and uncoerced 'Yes' from a woman over the FREAKING LEGAL AGE LIMIT, it is rape. Period. Nothing else about the situation matters.

Is the twerp who posted this implying that it was ok when no one cared? (Or, as I suspect, are they overwhelmed by the amount of attention they got by seeking attention with their misdeeds?)

Oh, little, little man. My sincere hope is that it gets much, much worse before it gets better.

As he is the center of the known universe, I assume he is referring to most of the people who have opinions of which he is aware. One cannot expect him to be aware of all the opinions. He is very important, and as such, has many more important rapings to commit.

I still feel so conflicted that my ray of hope in all of this is Anonymous. I don't like them - they have fucked up royally before. But I like them - they care, and if nothing else they will force this to be pursued. It's a weird, weird, scary world.

With you. They have done shitty stuff, but lately either they want to clean up their image or they just genuinely changed for the better and are seemingly the only ones who do care.

The difficult thing about Anonymous is that they're not a unified group flying under one banner for one purpose. Different sets of people use the Anonymous name to give an idea of where they're coming from and the sort of tactics they'll be willing to use.

I know that fiction is fiction and doesn't correlate directly to real life BUT I thought Jane Campion's "Top of the Lake" series was a very sobering portrayal of the horrific rape culture in a small NZ town.

The terrible police reaction to this "Rape Club" has me starting to think that Campion was making a pretty salient point on New Zealand's troubling attitude/dismissal of rape victims. Any other "Top of the Lake" fans see the similarities?

I started watching that series while I was furloughed during the shutdown. It was so good, but it was not helping the fact that I was feeling depressed what with not having anything useful to go do with myself, so I stopped. I should watch the rest of it now.

I have, for many years, worked in services in New Zealand that look after victims of sexual violence. There are high rates of sexual violence in New Zealand. According to a WHO report, the rate in New Zealand is similar (or slightly lower) than the US. Many people do not report, or disclose years post the events. This is the case worldwide. I can honestly say that the New Zealand police have been trying extremely hard over the past few years to improve their response to sexual violence. This very unfortunate incident will be thoroughly investigated. Top of the Lake was fiction, albeit in a much more beautiful setting than parts of West Auckland.

Funny how all these cases where girls are assaulted on film, where men brag about rape on social media, where they confess to 'sex' with someone under the age of consent, still get dismissed over and over again for "lack of evidence".

What do you have to do these days to be arrested for this kind of shit? I guess do it in front of a police officer, on tape, with 3 notarized witnesses?

I'm not sure they actually filmed the assaults, just themselves bragging about it afterwards.

You know? The sad thing is I don't think it would have EVER come to light then. Rape is so ingrained into our culture as "a thing that happens to women" and victim blaming and the perceived loss of masculinity that none of the victims would ever come forward.
