I still can't really wrap my head around the fact that men aren't expected to be able to control themselves around a skirt and yet it's women who shouldn't be trusted with nuclear codes because of periods.

This is a truly horrendous story that is far too common.

Obviously the answer is to remove the eyes of every baby boy born with eyes. It seems they can't handle the images that come through their eyes, so we should remove them. /sarcasm

Fuck these men, an inquest should be called into the men who questioned this girl!

My sister just turned 13 today. I can't even freaking imagine the rage I would feel to be a family member or friend of those 13-year-old girls, or any of the other victims, while having to witness the police blatantly brush this off and shrug their shoulders.

Oh and also, to those boys' parents - teach your precious sons to be decent human beings and to, you know, not assault or rape people.

I'm ending my post with this: I CAN'T EVEN.

My sister's going to be 13 this month, and my brother's gonna be 15 in December. I tell my sister to always stick up for what feels right to her, no matter the situation. I've had really in-depth talks with them both, but especially my brother about consent and what that means and how it works. I don't know if he's getting that from our mom or his dad, but he's definitely going to get it from me. I've also taught him how to properly scrub a toilet and do laundry. Fuck yeah, feminist older sisters!

Can we please applaud 3 News for being the kind of program that does good and helps society? These boys and the police are in hot water because of their investigation. More of this please.

It seems sad that this and Maryville are only getting prosecutions when journalists step up. At least someone seems to be able to fight the good fight, but how many of these stories aren't being picked up by the press because they have the "wrong" narrative? Having the press be the ones who arbitrate which stories get attention and don't is just going to exacerbate an already unfair rate of prosecution/outrage. Law enforcement (at all levels) needs to get their fucking house in order when it comes to this shit.

I concur but I prefer to see the media working on behalf of the people than the usual shit show. Not to mention maybe if we see enough heat being put on the police and people committing these crimes we'll see more cases taken seriously in the future, or maybe they won't even be committed. The issue with a lot of these young men is they thing they're untouchable and may even be on a local level, but when the court of public opinion comes down on them, they will not go unpunished. I agree that law enforcement needs to do their jobs and work on the behalf of the victims. There's no question. But I'll still take this.

Huh. I guess just walking around with a vagina is asking for it according to some people. People (both men and women) are unbearably ignorant about rape and unbelievably cruel. Seriously, why is it easier to tell a 13 year old child that she was asking to be assaulted than to actually break up a gang of criminals and prevent the assault of other children? WHY IS THAT EASIER? I address that question not just to the NZ cops but to everyone who makes excuses for rapists and blames victims...seriously, just explain to me what you are thinking when you do this.

Off to glue my exploded head back together.

      People are freaking idiots.

Have you ever heard of the "Just World" fallacy? Some people are so incapable of believing that bad things DO happen to good people, that they automatically assume that if something bad happened, the person deserved it.

Oh, you got hit by a car? You shouldn't have walked in front of it! Oh, your entire family was lost in a sinkhole? Well, you shouldn't have moved to Florida! Oh, you were thirteen and raped by a bunch of predatory teenage boys? You shouldn't have gone out drinking as a woman (in a skirt no less), dummy! UGH.

These people seriously need to pull their heads out of their asses.

The victim is always to blame if she's female. Period.

I was blamed for being assaulted at college for.....wait for it....sleeping in the top bunk bed while my drunken female roommates brought their football player boyfriends into the room to "party" during my first week of college....and the guys pulled me out of bed and assaulted me at 2 in the morning while I was asleep.

      Because....I existed?

This stuff goes REALLY deep in our culture, in all the world's cultures.

We need to be MUCH more fierce and protective of today's young women coming up; they need to embrace the idea of being called a "bitch" when protesting basic, inhuman, violative ideas and actions.....

'Cause this shit isn't getting "better." It's getting worse.

All of this is crazy-insane horseshit and I feel for those poor girls, but something really sticks out in my mind.

If it was known that this happens, why are these girls hanging out with these guys? It seems like this was common knowledge, but I could be wrong.

There's been a lot of really crappy NZ stories lately...but most of what I've read over the years has been overwhelmingly positive, especially since the Lord of the Rings movies.

actually, a few vigilante groups popped up.

One offered 4 K for video proof of someone hurting those guys ("we do not encourage violence, but if you happen to have a vid, preferrably HD, we'd love to pay") and I have read that some gang members (mongrel mob and others) in Auckland offered their help, if needed, to the fathers of the victims.

It is just a matter of time, I guess.

I know someone who works the online hotline at RAINN.....the stories. She obvs doesn't go into too much detail, but some of the things she hears. The one that made my jaw drop was consensual paedohpilia. The kid calling was like, no I LIKE it when my 56 year old relative has sex with me.

        I can't.
