So here's the thing: I agree, it's a big deal when the mayor of a major metropolis breaks the law and does drugs. I don't have a problem with it, but I acknowledge that other people do. So you can proceed in a couple ways. Here's the way that Gawker has chosen to proceed: to chase clicks by presenting the story of a white mayor in a dominantly white country as using a drug that is no more illegal than powder cocaine because that drug is associate with poor, black people. Gawker has decided to play up, again and again, the angle that inspires an extra helping of salaciousness and outrage due to entrenched racism and classism. Further, that dovetails nicely with how Rob Ford is generally discussed, a discussions with absolutely heaping amounts of class and race weirdness that have nothing to do with his politics and his policies.

I think you've deliberately stoked racial panic in an effort to get clicks, I think you know that's what you've done, and I think if Business Insider or Buzzfeed did it, you'd be the first to give them shit about it.

Also: I said white Canada. You wanna bust out the almanac for that one, Tom?

I am very interested in knowing how his supporters will deal with this one. I am very, very curious!

Edit (the above was written while listening to the video. . . I JUST heard this part): "I wasn't lying. . . you guys didn't ask me the right question!" WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See it was not his fault. The booze made him do it. Then the reporters didn't ask the right question. They are obviously at fault for the whole thing. Had they simply asked correctly the first time Rob Ford would never have smoked the crack cocaine while in a drunken stupor. Stupid mainstream liberal media.

Enter a drunken stupor. You can do anything in a drunken stupor, apparently.

I would much rather a mayor on cocaine than a mayor prone to alcoholic stupors where they only have vague recollections of what they did.

While we're here, I'd just like to say that I do not huff ether and roll around in a kiddie pool full of butterscotch pudding, wearing only a jockstrap. I may have done so in the past, during one of my opium binges, but I do not currently do it.

Thank you, Rob Ford, for your inspiring example, and for showing me the way.

And I am not an addict.

Were you already wearing the jockstrap or did the drugs make you? Because I think all men should wear jockstraps regardless of whether they are drug binge pudding wrestling or not.

An elected official of a major metropolitan area has admitted to occasionally falling into drunken stupors of such magnitude that he doesn't recall his actions; and whereupon one of those stupors included smoking crack cocaine ... while in office.

But he doesn't think he should resign.

He's an embarrassment to the office of Mayor and the city of Toronto. He needs help for alcohol abuse and cannot perform his mayoral duties and seek effective help concurrently.

He should resign. Get his life in order. Then re-run for mayor of Toronto.

I liked the reporter's question that abruptly ended the press conference: "Are you on drugs right now?"

It caused Ford to roll his eyes and walk off, but it was actually a legitimate question, given the bizarre way he was behaving. I was wondering the same thing as I watched this video.

He would never respond, but only because you didn't phrase the question the right way. Someone come up with a way to phrase it properly so he'll be forced to answer!
