"Detective Inspector Bruce Scott put it this way: "None of the girls have been brave enough (emphasis mine) to make formal statements to us so we can take that to a prosecution stage."

Fuck off and die, Inspector Bruce Scott.

The real problem is what cowards those rape victims are, obviously.

Yeah I thought that was an unfortunate way of phrasing it. I can definitely see how someone not well acquainted with dealing with survivors wouldn't understand why it's problematic to use that word though.

I'm confused about the law here (not that that's unusual). Why does it matter if the girls come forward formally if there's video of the boys confessing to crimes on social media?

In the States, you would need someone else to testify about the crime. You can't just convict someone based on a defendant's statement. Saying "I raped a girl" isn't enough. Although laws vary country to country, I'm going to assume that NZ also requires some other evidence.

[ETA: It appears the police do not even know the names of the girls because they haven't come forward.]

Makes me remember that kid in Texas who went to jail because he "joked" in the Facebook about going to a school and shooting up other kids.

I guess New Zealand doesn't care as much.

"It's not rape,. I had sex with one girl who is 13 when i was 16.. She wanted it and thats all that matters"

... If it's illegal to have sex with anyone under 16, why can't they arrest this person? He's admitted to a crime. And if there are videos of these teenagers admitting to their behaviour, again, how is there not enough evidence to arrest them? Am I missing something?!?

Not sure about NZ but in most places you need to have a victim come forward to prosecute a crime.

"I am a good person at heart and I have matured and have taken this as a massive learning experience."

Uh, don't be dumb, Erin. We all know that women exist for men's personal development. I'm sure we can all rest easy knowing these ladies helped this guy grow as a person.

Oh wait, no. None of that is right. Fuck this shit.

      Don't for get that:

He also apologised to the young girls who had featured on the Facebook page.

"All the girls that have been effected by this whole ridiculousness I apologize and wish the best for you."

So, apparently just saying "my bad?" makes it all ok? Great!

"Sorry I killed your dog and ate it in front of you. I apologize and wish the best for you."

"Sorry to anyone who's house I set on fire. If you have been effected by this whole ridiculousness I apologize and wish the best for you."

Listen to what happened when a girl who claimed to know a victim of the Roast Busters called a local radio station:

Absolutely awful. All in all, not too proud to be an Aucklander today. :(

I didn't listen to the whole thing, because I work in a shared office and my coworker just got back. HOWEVER: big question from the first few minutes...this girl Amy says she was aware of them/they picked her up when she was 14-15. She's 18 now. THAT MEANS THEY'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS.

And, or course, if you did that they'd arrest you for assault. Because them getting their asses kicked for being disgusting rapists would be considered more of a violation than them actually being rapists. Fuck.

I was watching the first report of this on 3 news. They were sure to mention that she wasn't a virgin at the time of her rape. Because as we all know, if she wasn't a virgin she was asking for it, right?

This whole thing makes me want to hulk out.

I just sent this off to Sony...
    Hello Sony Pictures,
This disgusting story made me think of contacting you. A group of young men, calling themselves the Roast Busters, and using your Ghostbusters icon and imagery, are getting young girls drunk and filming themselves doing it. PLEASE SICK YOUR LAWYERS ON THEM!!! For some reason they aren't facing the consequences for the actual rapes, so please make them very very poor by suing them for violating your copyrighted images and brand (see image in news story link below).
