Does anyone do any research before posting this stuff? While I can see where this might seem ridic without any context, he did study engineering so he does have working knowledge: In 1997, Kutcher was a biochemical engineering student at the University of Iowa and was discovered by a local talent scout.

We're just joshing, of course the real reason Lenovo hired him was for his semesters of experience as a biochemical engineering undergrad major in Iowa. Ashton also has an extra toe on one foot. Now, your turn for another piece of Ashton trivia!

Biochemical engineering? What kind of computers are they making over there? Is this how the Cylons get started? No wonder so many of them are so pretty.

Though an obvious publicity stunt, it got me wondering... who does get to call themselves an engineer?

I know plenty of finance folks with engineering degrees. So an engr degree can't be the only criterion. I also have worked w/ a rare breed of old school "engineers" who didn't graduate college but could design and machine just about anything.

Full disclosure: I'm a project engineer and I'm still trying to sort out my feelings on sharing a job title with Ashton. If I take some selfies can I call myself a male model?

Let us not forget the hideous trend of renaming housewives "Domestic Engineers."

Well, there goes the credibility of "engineer", forever added to the descriptive junkyard of wankiness, where it will rest atop "creative director".

I cringed when my now defunct Canadian networking former employer placed the title "System Engineer" on my business card knowing full well I was just a helper monkey.

okaaaaaaay. so before the young geeks of america start lining their walls with posters of a google-glass clad kutcher, lets examine this little itsy bitsy sentence:

"where he will spend several days conferring with engineers and designers"

I am a software engineer, and I would physically assault anyone who flew in for a couple of days to tell me what to build

Hate to break it to you, but most software engineers build what their higher ups tell them. Very few have the autonomy to build what they want. Kutcher is just a consultant, it's his job to come up with a concept. So of course he'll only fly in for a couple of days.

re: Kutcher consultant, fair enough. But I wasn't referring to who decides what gets built; I was referring to the idea that anyone, anywhere can effectively understand or communicate what needs to get built over a few meetings. And you'll find that in serious companies, engineers get a buy in on the final product. They have to agree to build it, and agree to deadlines, so they most definitely have a say.

Of course, if you're working at a banner ad factory or an also-ran laptop company, they might just ship you the dogshit in a box and tell you "this is the brown we want".

This was a good move on Lenovo's part. An article was written about it on a very popular blog, Just as thousands of articles about it will be written worldwide. People are "talking" about it, and on this page alone, so far, the word Lenovo has appeared 7 times and will probably appear hundreds more by day's end. It doesn't matter that the comments are snarky, ridicule, flat out insults, whatever . . . y'all are thinking about Lenovo this morning when you might not otherwise.

I wasn't familiar with the company until I read this post. I don't know what they're paying him, but it looks like a good move.

Exactly. While Gawkerites cry about Kutcher's "unearned" job title, the name "Lenovo" is trending across major news sites, tech and business blogs. Which was the whole point of this job appointment. That said, Kutcher could do some good at Lenovo, because their consumer offerings are cheap disposable crap compared to their enterprise machines.

'Project Engineer'. Pretty much what my Dad would call a 'non-job'. And I'd agree with him.
