"... the shouty British tabloid allegedly engaged in extralegal practices of gathering information, including hacking the voicemail passwords of people in the news..."

Pardon my ignorance, but I always thought that "extralegal" meant "out of the jurisdiction of a the law," or somehow out of reach of whatever legal authority was in question. Am I wrong on this?

If I'm wrong here, I'm happy to be corrected. Because right now, to my ear, it just sounds like you're trying to use "extralegal" as a euphemism for "illegal" because they haven't been convicted yet. But I think we can safely say that phone hacking, bribery, and all the other fun stuff they did is pretty damn illegal, and they simply haven't been convicted of doing those things just yet.

Oh, I used that term in the same way I would use “lawless”—that is, occurring outside of clearly authorized ways of information gathering. This can mean illegal, but I’m not sure if we’re at the point where that’s 100% clear. (And we might be at that point! I could be wrong!)

Aw, they're wearing their Remembrance Day pins — extra early.

For those not familiar, this is the British Empire equivalent of wearing an American flag pin, but about 1000 times more revolting and cynical.

It's worth noting that the practice was widespread and that the public attitude was that it was being done only to famous people, who more or less had it coming.

They crossed a line in perception when they did it to Milly Dowler.

And don't forget the longstanding rumour that Brooks had an affair with Blair when he was PM.

Can someone explain how Piers Morgan has avoided charges? Are the authorities hoping someone will roll over and implicate more people involved in the spying operation? I just really want to see him in prison.

Completely off topic, but I wish lawyers in the US got to dress up for court the way barristers in the UK do. Arguing over petty discovery disputes would be a lot more fun wearing a wig.

They discuss doing away with them every now and then, but it's always thrown out on the basis that it lends them a certain level of anonymity outside of the court setting.

In reality I suspect it's more an affection for wigs.

This is why every Murdoch media editorial or statement against the NSA should include the sentence "don't you know invading privacy is our job?"

Honestly, the same should be said of every media outlet's opposition to the NSA.

I could take all of the celebrity stalking, hacking shit as immoral as it is but the fact they hacked the messages of a missing child is the part that makes me hope they all end up in prison for a long long time. To have listened to the voicemails of her parents as they grew more concerned and to delete some messages so that the inbox wasn't full and they could listen to more in future is a lack of basic empathy on a worrying level. There was a day or two when Milly Dowler's parents, sister and friends had hope she was alive because she had been listening to and deleting messages. Scum.
