    An anecdote:

My wife likes kitchen stuff. Early on in our marriage, we were in a mall and there was a Williams-Sonoma she wanted to go into. I wasn't that interested and was gonna check out another store nearby. She told me I had to go in with her or no one would help her. I was skeptical about this and told her to go in and I would watch from outside.

Surprisingly to my young naive mind, I watched as both the women working there actively dodged acknowledging my wife. They talked to each other or kept asking the only other customer in the store if they needed anything, actively ignoring my wife when she would directly ask them a question.

Annoyed at this, I stepped into the store, immediately drawing the eyes of the two employees who both rushed over to welcome me in. They asked if there was anything I was looking for and I simply replied, "I'm just coming in to make sure my wife is finding what she came in for."

We left and I apologized to my wife. I know it's not the same thing as being accused of credit card fraud, but it's ridiculous that it happened.

I brought my son and his friend to Wal-Mart to buy a game before other stores had opened on a Sunday morning. As we were walking out they stopped his (black) friend and not my son. We're talking two 11 year olds accompanied by me. I stepped in to tell them to move along. Life lesson for me and my son, not such news to his friend.

I'm so confused by this... This anecdote is relating that Williams Sonoma workers are sexist? Not to layer more sexism on here, but isn't that a kitchen/cooking store?? In what way could it make sense for them to alienate female shoppers? In any case, I'm sorry your wife had to deal with it.

"the total number of stops and detentions of customers by race and national origin in the past year, all documents pertaining to stops and detentions, all customer discrimination complaints received in the past year..."

Can't they just forge some of that or get rid of certain information in order to make themselves look better?

Possibly, but if they were found in contempt of the legal system that would be huge doo-doo hitting the fan.

Well, they could, but then they'd be purposefully destroying evidence, which is also illegal. And in the case of Macy's, they are already legally required to keep a record of all stops/detentions, as a result of a previous lawsuit.

Oh, are they investigating the NYPD for their role as well? Because it doesn't sound like their investigating the NYPD as well.

Do Macy's and Barney's realize that whites commit credit card fraud too? And isn't the best deterrent stores have just asking for ID?

At least in the case of the young man, they did ask for ID.
