"Local branch" makes it sound as though they have a fucking mall kiosk.

Al Qaeda in its current form is some combination of a franchised business and an open-source movement. Take away all the global jihad stuff and you have a system that would make MBA/TED talk types squeal.

Just a shot from the bleachers but maybe if we would stop casually using our embassies as thinly veiled NSA and CIA HQs motivated - not by diplomacy or mutual respect - but rather sloppy, bat-shit paranoia, cynical corporatist angling, and an unhinged obsession with total information asymmetry they would, you know, maybe pump the breaks a bit.

Indeed, the Iranian students who stormed the American embassy in 1979 did so largely on the (entirely correct assumption) the British and American-led coup which overthrew their democratically-elected President 25 years earlier was, in fact, hatched in their respective embassies.

tl;dr we can either totally ignore mutualism and continue to arrogantly shit all over international law and the sovereignty of others OR we can pearl clutch when the baddies violate these very same protocols and established norms in the interest of whatever their cause happens to be. We can't do both.

Why does this always happen when I need to go to Yemen. Our honeymoon is ruined!

        Oh, look!

Update: Reuters is reporting that the explosions people heard near the embassy were fireworks ignited in celebration of a wedding, which prompted security guards to fire live rounds into the air.

I, for one, see no circumstance in which the upcoming torrent of drone attacks will worsen the situation at all.

It's clear that the best response to this situation is to get more deeply involved in the Middle East.

Only in Yemen can your wedding be mistaken for a terrorist attack. I fucking love that country. Good sailing, too.
