It's starting to sound like the police have been investigating the Ford family's and its toadies' alleged ties to drug dealers long before that video surfaced.

Maybe we'll find out that the police actually have multiple camera angles of the crack smoking.

I'd settle for audio of Ford taking a wheezy inhale and exclaiming "tight-tight-tight!" (or whatever the crackhead equivalent is).

If this was a story about powder cocaine instead of crack, would you consider it as big of a deal? I've got to assume that there are plenty of politicians, including mayors of major cities, who do coke. I agree that having video of one of them using it is a big deal, but I can't help but feel that the fact that it's crack contributes to the perception of this being a particularly sordid or sensationalistic story.

And frankly, I just don't care if politicians do drugs. It's irrelevant to me. If those drugs start causing them to behave in ways that undermine their ability to do their jobs, then fine. But Rob Ford's Rob Ford-ness sure seems to be a permanent part of his personality, not a function of his drug use.

They're usually the ones aggressively legislate against drugs, so yeah it does bother me if politicians do drugs.

The sordid and sensationalist nature of the story is fueled by the right wing Mayor's constant rants about other people ripping off the system and not being held to account, for instance, a minimum-wage community centre employee who might have been having a bad day: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/to… . When it comes to his continuously law-breaking buddies, though, he has no compunction about writing a character reference on Mayor's Office letterhead with a City of Toronto crest, saying that his continuously law-breaking buddy is a good guy and always acts with "tact and diplomacy": http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/i… . His brother/spokesman/puppeteer then claims that his bro doesn't judge people or throw the book at them. The tactful and diplomatic buddy was convicted of threatening to kill a woman, not the only time he's been charged with that.

This might have sounded like a rant, some of us are sick to death of him and his thuggish special interest supporters.

So the police knew about the video, knew that Siad was a known associate of Ford's, and knew that he was attempting to sell you the video.... so then they called off the investigation? How odd.

No, apparently they're still actively investigating all this stuff. The chief of police here has been conspicuously cagey about releasing details about what they know and who they know it about specifically because an investigation is still on-going.

John, a lot of people are saying "so what" and "let it go" and such. But I think they're missing the point. This is a corrupt politician that has always preached from the conservative play book: drugs, bootstraps, law and order, etc. Dirty, and preaching against his own brand of dirt as well.

Everyone of his ilk needs to go. And the fact that you've been closer to this story than almost any other journalist means that it's yours to run with. I look forward to hearing more from Gawker about this as it progresses.

I also know that Gawker is "just" a gossip blog. But over the last year or so, they've really proven that they have investigative chops as well.

In related, link-brag news, I have a book about an Ontario undercover drug cop coming out in December from Random House Canada:

Lest anyone think the cops are covering for the mayor, most of the top brass, including the Chief, hates Ford.

When you look at the pedigree of the cops involved in this investigation it is rather interesting no?

Don't worry John, this will all come out eventually. Once all the warrant info and police testimony is made public, the truth will be out there. It really is shocking to me that this man is still the mayor my city.

If those were American cops, Gawker would probably be hiring a new editor right about now.
