  These girls are getting clean, why the judgy comment? Obviously it's better never to start, but that isn't how addiction works. Half the time is begins with asshole dealers getting underprivileged kids (who most likely they their own issues) hooked before they're mature enough to make a rational decision. By the time they realize their horrible error they're physically addicted.

Maybe I live in a bit of a bubble but I'm actually kind of shocked at the number of people in the comments here who completely don't understand addiction and its connection to poverty, lack of education, trauma, mental illness and racism, among a thousand other things. I sort of thought it was common knowledge that addicts aren't just addicted for funsies. Like, nobody wakes up one morning and thinks "hey, let's get addicted to heroin today!". People who live with addiction and aren't ready to quit have thought about it, probably more than once, and actually decided that continuing to use that substance (along with all its risks and dangers) is actually better than continuing on with their shitty lives without that substance. Like, whatever is going on for them is bad enough that heroin, in some way, makes it better. Think about that.

  Eh, people like to feel high and mighty. Poverty aside, none of us know the inner workings of someone's life. A girl I graduated with many years ago started doing heroin around senior year. She was rich as fuck and had everything. However, turned out sexual abuse ran rampant in that household and it only came out years later. I try not to assume I know why people make the decisions they do.

I'm truly horrified by the effects of this drug, but am I the only one who doesn't feel a ton of sympathy for these people, and the many like them, who willingly administer the drug to themselves, repeatedly? I know, I know, "addiction" blah, blah, blah. But, seriously, it seems like a little bit of natural selection going on, if you ask me. If you're so weak that you find pleasure in a combination of codeine and gasoline, maybe you're just not that cut out for life?

  I kind of get what you're saying, but as the sister of an addict who is also the kindest, smartest (except for street smarts, obv) and more generous person I have ever met, I have to disagree. A lot of addicts are self-medicating a ton of pain and anguish, whether from mental illness, PTSD from a traumatic event, addictive personality, a mix of two or more or something else terrible. It's frustrating and infuriating, of course, but I still have compassion.
