Elephants are one of those animals that just undo me emotionally. I almost can't deal with how beautiful and majestic and amazing they are. Knowing how intelligent they are, how closely they bond, that they very clearly love, and grieve and, and... I just can't. Like in the video, when mama and grandma greet with intertwined trunks and they show how happy they are to see each other, and baby's little teeny extended trunk hello.... the feels, they kill me dead.

(and then teenage brother shows up and takes a giant piss and poo, I mean, of course he does)

Special Us Weekly report...Elephants Are Just Like Us! Their teenage sons embarrass them every time they try to take a nice family picture.

But I'm with you on the serious bit. I kind of get the feeling that along with whales and apes, elephants are people. Maybe not the kind of people we're used to, but emotions and intelligence that are close enough to be worth expanding the definitions.

Years ago, I worked as a researcher for a documentary about a herd of elephants. As this herd went on their yearly migration, one of the females died. They stayed around her body for 24 hours, calling and lowing, then moved on. When they returned months later, they went out of their way to locate her skeleton and spent another several hours picking up her bones. It was magical to watch. We need to save these creatures; majestic doesn't begin to cover their beauty.

So this is completely OT but I have a request for some advice from Jezebel readers (Jezebelians? Jezeblish?): my GF has gained some weight and I want to talk to her about it. I'm obviously not going to break up with her over it but I've been feeling less attracted to her lately and care about her and would like her to be healthy in the long run. Any advice on how to talk to her?

      1) Check your sense of normal. Don't look at online pictures or magazines (full of photoshop). Go sit in a public place and people watch. How well do your expectations for what is attractive fit human reality? How do clothes make people look different? If you guys are teens, make sure to look at older women (20's-30's). No reason to get on your girlfriend if her weight gain is just part of normal adulthood and she is gaining it earlier than her peers.

If you see a moderate gap between your expectations and reality, work on yourself by further people watching. Once you have a bit of a more 'normal' sense, think of one nice observation about the physical appearance of everyone you see, male and female. This will train you to be more comfortable with yourself, and her, as human beings worthy of human aesthetic appreciation. After a couple of months, reassess and see if the weight gain thing is still an issue.

I started writing on how to get a realistic grasp on healthy and unhealthy, but honestly, I doubt you are dealing with an unhealthy permanent weight gain. I get the feeling that you guys are teenagers, and what is likely going on is that her metabolism has changed and she isn't used to it yet, hasn't learned to compensate, and has put on some extra pounds.

This happens to most women in their teen years. It won't happen to you until your late 20's or early 30's. In this case.

She deserves nothing less than your compassion and support. If you discover that you just aren't attracted to her anymore, you might have to admit that you just don't like her enough to stay with her.

And tell her, when you leave, "I just discovered I don't like you that much" NOT "I'm not attracted to you anymore". Because the former is generally more honest: maybe the weight gain communicates something to you value-wise (validly, or invalidly) that you aren't aware of. For example: you value liking yourself, you value keeping up appearances, you value perseverance in the face of hard things...Of course, you ought to consider whether or not the value you think she may be violating is one that you yourself could successfully live up to (see 'see realistic expectations' above). If you are not living up to your own values— change yourself, not her. And just see what happens.

it's like he knew they were being filmed, and decided to photobomb by mooning the camera and relieving himself. Either that, or he just saw how cute all the ladies were being and thought, "ugh, this is just too sappy—gotta go shake things up with that Hallmark moment!" ;-p

I'm currently reading this incredible book called "When Elephants Weep". It's about emotional capacity in all animals, but there is a lot about elephants in there. The whole book is incredible. READ IT if you love stories that reveal that animals feel basically the same thing as us. Here's one elephant fact I learned from it:

Elephants do not actually go to grave yards to die like we thought for so long. Actually, an elephant heard will slow down and wait for an injured, sick, or even a grieving elephant. In one story, the one elephant's very young baby died and in her grief, she carried the body of the baby with her. Every now and then she'd need to set the body down and rest. All the elephants in the herd slowed to wait with her and would stay with her when she took her breaks. Elephants are incredible.

Apes do that too. I've seen several documentaries with chimps, and gorillas, where a mama whose baby dies ends up carrying around the baby's body for days and days after death. Like, they just can't accept it, they're so sad. Tears tears tears.

Eh, they probably could have cut out the last ten seconds. I really didn't need to see the turds and piss tumbling out of that one elephant. So much piss.

That was seriously distracting from the sweetness of the family greeting. It made me feel like I had to go, too (I didn't).
