I'm conflicted between the fact that this is clearly an awful, destructive drug and the fact that media reports of the damage of drugs are always, always, always overblown and eventually disputed by research. Essentially without exception.

can you provide an example of one, or even more than one report of Krokodil in a large media outlet which was later found incorrect? I can't find any.

I dunno have you seen the pictures? And some commenters seemed to be fairly well informed about it from it's popularity in Russia, they seemed to verify that it's just plain awful.

The documentary is linked in the first post from two weeks ago. I'll post it again here with all the usual warnings about DO NOT WATCH IT IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP.

Okay, I was going to do a story about "Krokodil" too, and wanted to use these exact same images. But the interesting thing is, if you go to the comments of this YouTube video Hamilton is sourcing this from ... there's someone who claims they know Russian, and the story is actually about a dude who got attacked by an axe! So I decided not to use them. Does anyone here know Russian? Can they watch the clip and confirm or deny this is actually a "Krokodil" victim??

I'm genuinely honored to be mistaken for HamNo, but this video is used so often by so many outlets, I went for it because there have been no news reports on Chicago news stations for me to screengrab. I will totally change it if it's the case. Don't want to add to the problem. I'll find something else...

My Russian is incredibly rusty these days, and I only watched once but things I can confirm: no mention of Krokodil or drugs, and it was about a fight.

    I'm conflicted on this, honestly.

On the one hand you have a massive group of people who are all about legalizing drugs and having the right to put in their body whatever an adult wants to put in it. But then you have the same people saying that Krokodil is evil and should be cleaned off the streets.

Look...I don't know if you can have it both ways, honestly. You either think adults should be allowed to consume whatever drug they want and take responsibility for the results, or you think drugs should be banned and that personal agency over ones body is to be regulated by law. If an adult chooses to partake in Krokodil, then there is clearly a market for it. If there is a market for it, then should people not be allowed to do this to their own bodies?

It's rather hypocritical of people to say that this should be removed from the street when there's clearly a market for it and you also believe that an adult can take whatever drug they want.

Actually, no. Legalizing drugs doesn't mean anything goes. There are ways to regulate drugs that are inherently dangerous in ways that would bar crazy adulterants that can cause immediate harm like this.

People should be allowed to blow their brains out if they want to. That doesn't mean we can't find ways to help them out of that situation but when you're pouring billions of dollars into a system whose main goal is to arrest and incarcerate, we have no money left over to help in prevention and rehabilitation.

Why do people have to try drugs that are new, why can't they just stick to the "oldie but goodie" ones. Whoever is creating this drug and selling deserves permanent jail time.

Usually because they can't afford any of the drug they're currently addicted to. They want some high, any high, so they buy whatever similar drug they can afford or find. Even when it makes their skin rot off. Addiction is not a rational thing.

"While one of the patients knew she was taking the drug, the other two—frighteningly—did not. "

Is there more information telling how the drug was ingested if they did not know they were taking it? That's terrifying!

I was discussing this on Facebook with some people in Vancouver and here heroin is about $10 a hit, and of course a hit lasts you for hours. Since you can get codeine over the counter I imagine that krokodil would be cheaper than $8 a hit, but it would have to be in the $1-$2 range to make any kind of serious impact, particularly since the high doesn't last. It would actually be more expensive than heroin even over the course of a single day.

You lucky Canadians with your 2-2-2s.

I miss Seattle. Now if I want something stronger than Advil over the counter, I'd have to get it from TJ (dos dos dos?).

Protip: if you want to up the ante on your painkiller without interrupting TJ while he's watching the soccer game on his iPhone, take your meds with a shot of espresso with sugar. For some reason this increases the apparent strength of the meds by up to 30%. A little tidbit I picked up from my time as a newsletter editor at Starbucks.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a rather clever "War on Drugs" kind of thing? I mean How convenient that there's a drug that with normal use Does something this nasty to people?

Perhaps I'm just too jaded since I grew up during some of the nastiest underhanded drug related crap done by the DEA and CIA in the name of defending us from communism.

Not sure if you mean the drug users, or the DEA and CIA always jonesing for another social engineering high.

Of course Druggies are going to take cheap drugs with little regard for their well-being. That's what would make it so easy.
