Has anyone seen this absolutely incredible and generally inspiring statement from Sen. Elizabeth Warren? Her general badassery might give us all a little hope.

Do you have a link to this? I would like to send it to some of my fellow non-essential employees.

My household has lost 75% of its income because despite Obama's last-minute bill, a lot of military people won't be paid for the duration of the shutdown, and if orders were lost, won't be paid for the past few weeks.

    Rent is due today.

What. The. Fuck. Am. I. Gonna. Do.

I feel you. We are in a situation as well. How can elected officials care so little for the people of our nation?

I love the articles where the forced "women's interest" spin is sublimated into satire.

Don't forget scientist ladies! Even if you're not directly employed by the NIH, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) can't be updated with new sequences, data, or papers. Even though I'm employed by my university, the federal government owns all my materials, my lab space, and my notebook, so I can't move my experiment forward until the shutdown is over.

Not to mention lady (and not-lady) teachers and researchers of other stripes: I and other professors I know have lost access to gov't websites like the Census Bureau and the National Parks Service that we use to access up-to-date statistics for use in our classes. Oops, I guess it hurts students, too.

As well as the tons and tons of non-profits that get grants from NIH, NSF, DOD, DOS, etc.

I know this sounds stupid...but take a moment to contact your congressperson. I know that it can appear that law makers really don't care about what their constituents really think, but their aides do note the numbers of people who contact them. It is worth a shot. Don't forget to add the ridiculous Boehner to your list! Here is a link to find out how to contact your local congress person: http://www.contactingthecongress.org/

How about AmeriCorps ladies? for those of us serving our communities through non-profits and government agencies our paychecks could be very delayed. A pretty heavy blow when we are already paid below the poverty line and are not allowed to get a 2nd job...

"we are already paid below the poverty line and are not allowed to get a 2nd job."

Really? What on earth is the logic for not allowing you to have a second job?

Holy crapbaskets. Stephen Harper poroguing parliment in canada does not sound so terrible now. Not that it's the same thing at all, but at least when our leaders decide that the government needs to take a break while they get their shit together, the whole country doesn't shut down.

Not to mention if a budget doesn't get passed in Canada it triggers an election.
