If the convictions were overturned and she doesn't want to go, can she be forced to?

There's no chance in hell she'll be extradited.

This. She's already been exonerated once. I'm pretty sure the US is gonna be like "Fa'real? No". It's highly doubtful that she'll be extradited.

I feel so bad for this woman... egg on my face if she did it (but I really don't think she did it).

I was living in Italy when this all went down, and the evidence was pretty damning: they bought bleach at 2am the night of the murders (in Italy, the tax police check to see if you have receipts when you buy stuff, and are rampant to prevent under-the-counter sales, so it is so engrained on Italians to keep receipts that the boyfriend kept his). They tried to clean the whole house. She then accused her boss of the murder. And they found a knife at the BF's house with her dna on the handle and Meredith's on the tip, but it had been soaked in bleach. That was declared inadmissible. She claimed to not understand the questioning, but she answered in Italian, and she speaks it better than I do. so....um...there's that.

Why don't they just admit that they want to stone her in the town square for being an "impure" woman and save everybody a lot of trouble?

But his semen was inside the murder victim. I think that's just called evidence.

Maybe he is in jail because he's guilty, as DNA evidence has shown?

Everyone should read "The Monster of Florence" by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. Its a non-fiction account of the investigation of the most notorious serial killer in Italy, and also a great look into the Italian judicial system, which is, in fact, bat shit crazy. I wont spoil the book, but the new afterword provides some light on the Amanda Knox case.

I first learned about Amanda Knox when I read that book in 2011 and have followed it closely ever since. The Italian judicial system is so clearly fucked, it's crazy.

I don't put much trust in a justice system that lets a prime minister walk around freely while he is being accused of various counts of fraud, bribery and sex with underaged prostitutes. Or one that doesn't send him to jail until every kind of retrial and appeal has been exhausted.

Does Double Jeopardy not exist in Italy? Unless there is new evidence that ties her to the murder can they actually try her again?

It's not technically double jeopardy as it is considered a continuation of the original case. For example, if the Italian high court doesn't like the appellate court's decision from this trial, they could send it back a third time.

If this seems ridiculous and pointless, it's important to remember that if they beat this particular dead horse long enough, Meredith will come back to life.

That's how it works in Italy. It's like animal sacrifice, except with baseball bats and pizza.

I have a question, say she was convicted again, obviously she shouldn't
go back to Italy and from my understanding of our extradition agreement
with Italy the US will not force her back since she was already
convicted, then it was overturned. But could she go to any other
countries that are part of the EU or could she be brought back to Italy
if say she was in Ireland?

I believe yes, if she were to travel abroad, Italy would flag her passport and she /could/ be dragged back. If she's convicted, I don't see her traveling out of the US for the rest of her life.

Thanks for the insight, I haven't really followed the case just the stuff after with the extradition and was curious.

If she's convicted, she risks being sent to Italy if she ever travels abroad in a country that has an extradition treaty with Italy. But it's unlikely the US will extradite her.

She won't be extradited, but an appeal doesn't automatically mean that she'll be convicted. If the court does not find convincing evidence (as they didn't in the first degree), the trial is likely to end the same as the other one.

At any rate, Chico Forti is being detained in the U.S. in spite of a very weak case. I don't see the Americans being particularly up in arms over this. http://www.chicoforti.com/index.php?q=en…
