    I'm a clinic escort, and I can tell you that all the people who actively protest (as opposed to those who gather to pray, but don't otherwise try to harass or engage with patients) at my clinic are equally bananas.

    Also, friendly tip to pro-choice allies: if you are walking or driving by a clinic where this is happening please don't engage with the protestors. I know they're frustrating and rage-inducing, but you are honestly making our jobs harder if you do that. If you want to show your support for the clinic or the escorts or the patients, just give us a thumbs-up, or buy us coffee. Perhaps this doesn't happen in other places, but my clinic is right on the sidewalk, and we get well-meaning passersby who do this all the time, and it just makes things worse for everyone.

      I consider it my weekly (or monthly) zen practice.

      Plus, it drives them crazy when you refuse to engage. They really really want to save you.

      But, no, it's definitely not for everyone, and I appreciate the folks who can recognize it isn't for them. There's nothing worse than trying to keep one of the escorts out of trouble in addition to everything else!

    Every time I see PP protesters, I donate to Planned Parenthood. $1 per protester, doubled if they are all white men. Signs are $.50/ per bloody fetus doubled if within spitting distance from playground, preschool or elementary school.

      Not to make any extra trouble for the heroic escorts, but an evil thought just crossed my mind. I wonder if any aspiring drama students have ever honed their improv skills by approaching such praying/preying fanatics by shrieking with apparent delight and approaching one or more of them, throwing their arms around them and saying things along the lines of "How ARE you? I haven't seen you since that AMAZING orgy!" I almost didn't recognize you without all the straps and leather and stuff! And so on. Bonus points for same-sex match-ups. A little taste of what public shaming and scorn feels like might be an interesting lesson for them. (Probably not, but it would be satisfying anyway.)

        I was thinking that I could be a distraction for the escorts. I can run around Porky Pig style, that would upset them. Or we can stage a gay make out secession, a drag show, anything really that they hate. We all know that they will not be able to stop watching and then no one would bother the escorts!

        I think a better plan would be to get the drama students to play fake clients trying to access the clinic in order to take some of the heat off of the actual patients. Maybe a couple of them could turn back and look like they're giving up to give the protesters a sense of satisfaction...maybe they could do it multiple times or appear to have a serious breakdown...

      When I was walking on the street once, a protester came up to me and tried to give me information while another protester was screeching in a bullhorn. I told both of them to get the ever loving hell away from me right in front of a cop. They both left immediately.

      Someone told me later that if you tell a protester to GTF away you, they have to by law.

      That true, Jezzies?

        No, they're allowed to follow you, talk to you, try to hand you things, etc., unfortunately, as long as you are on public property in the US of A.

        That said, most of them are, unsurprisingly, sniveling little creatures who like to harass people in vulnerable situations, so it's not exactly shocking that they're terrified whenever anyone comes back at them.

        Last election a dude was hanging out by the polling place with big, graphic, bloody anti-abortion signs and harassing passers by on their way to/from voting. When we walked past, he yelled, "do you think killing babies is okay?" My bf just looked at him and said, "Yes." And we walked away.
