Is there a reason why all British magazines come with free shit and American magazines don't? Because that would make me buy all the magazines.

Brazilian magazines come with free shit too! I've got like a gazillion silk scarves off Elle in the past couple of years.

So yes, a pretty scarf will make me buy a magazine.

The only magazine I read with any regularity is Tatler, because it's fucking hilarious. I like it half-sarcastically (oooh, another article on how to marry a Duke? Tell me more, oh wise leader!) and half-seriously (because some of their articles are genuinely really funny, in a Patsy Stone sort of way).

Anyway, how could you NOT spend a fiver on this gloriousness?! Dahling.

Tatler is appalling. But I'll admit, I've been known to hate read it, some of it is pretty golden. Also, I feel like the aristos that appear on the cover and in the pages are the one's who are attention seekers, I mean, darling didn't you know, one never appears on the magazine covers flaunting your position/wealth? If you have to show it, then how wealthy are you really?

Well, the Duke of Devonshire was in the last issue, talking about Chatsworth and the management of the estate, and the only aristo I can think of who is a bigger deal is the Duke of Westminster. He hasn't been interviewed, to my knowledge, but his kids are always in the party pages...

I think Tatler is like a big in joke for people with titles. The rest of us just don't quite get it but like to pretend that we do.

I buy Vogue and Elle (and used to buy Vanity Fair before Hitch passed) for the feature writing and the editorial fashion photography. I like my fantasy/escapism with a healthy dollop of snobbery.
(Anna Wintour is my spirit animal.)

I love me some Vogue and Tatler. One for the fashion snobbery, one for every other kind of snobbery.

I was in the States last month and got my hands on the September issue - I spent four hours in the spa with it. Heaven!

I am definitely checking Tatler out as a result of all the comments on this article - it looks divine!

I only buy magazines when flying. When I do, I go for:

    • tabloids (because they're hilarious - I truly crack up reading them)
    • Occasional ladymag with celeb I like on the cover (most recently i bought cosmo with Nina Dobrev because I am a fan of TVD - I know, I'm pathetic)
    • Entertainment Weekly if they're featuring TV shows or movie(s) I like or want to see

That's it. If I'm not flying, I don't buy magazines period.

I subscribe to a couple of political magazines and one cooking magazine sent straight to my Nook. But like you, the only time I purchase a magazine is when I fly, especially when taking a quick flight. I find that flying time is aspirational time; I tend to think of myself as some worldly jet-setter when in the air, not just the mid-level associate who gets the shit assignments in Pittsburgh or Riverside, CA. I pick up:

      - The Economist or New Yorker (too expensive and frequently published to subscribe to, but makes me feel as if I am part of the BIG conversation)

      - High fashion mags (lets me fantasize about someday spending four figures on an item of clothing or accessory, which then usually leads me to looking up what the lottery is at)

      - Fitness mags (like NOW I'm finally going to become the person who works out instead of going to happy hour or sleeping in)

      - fa

I also do the high fashion mag thing on occasion. Like, yes, one day I will totally have a Tim Gunn-approved wardrobe with staple pieces like a 600 dollar pencil skirt! lol

I LOVE LUCKY PEACH!! Favorite issue is still probably the apocalypse issue. They always have the best Illustrations, articles, stories and layout designs. If I could marry this magazine and have "super kids with amazing cooking knowledge" with it I would.

I made an absolutely amazing vietnamese gilled game hen, Kai Yaang, from their travel issue. The bird took over 48 hours total. And it was a fucking religious experience. This is my fav magazine ever. Hands down. It is like geeky zine guy gets famous as a chef, gets a lot of money and produces killer food mag. In love.

This cover is gorgeous. I probably wouldn't buy this mag because I'm not seeking transsexual fashionistas in the Middle East but it is simply stunning.

Laser guns, kittens, hot lanky men in spandex and capes, motorcycles, baby piggies, space panoramas, Loki, and a pot full of delicious gumbo. I would buy that magazine if it meant eating ramen for a month.

I only rarely buy magazines, and the cover really does matter. The two things that will make me pick one up are a celebrity whose interview is likely to be interesting (either because I'm a fan or because they rarely give interviews and I don't know what they'll say ahead of time) or an article (generally a serious one) that I really want to read. This means I buy mostly general magazines and the occasional one meant for men - lady mags only have women on the covers (ruling out 50%+ of the celebs I give a damn about) and tend to have fewer political and social articles. I can get sex tips and look at pictures of clothes online, for free.

Honestly, the covers don't really matter to me. I look at the headlines, and if they draw me in then I'll take a look inside. Then, maybe I'll buy the magazine. But I don't buy mags too often. Like Dodai said, there's so much to read online for free that even in an airport I prefer my iPad over a magazine.

I don't buy tabloids or even Cosmo or Glamour anymore. The older I get the more I realize they're just full of crap. I do still buy: Travel & Leisure, Sunset, Bon Appetit, and LA Magazine. Insight into food, travel, and fun events? Yes please!

(That line up makes it very clear that I'm a Southern Californian.)
