    No snark. I'm sure a lot of commenters (like the one's on NYDN site) will blame the mother for being an idiot, but a single mother traveling alone with a baby and another kid and just getting off an airplane can be an exhausting situation where it's quite understandable that you momentarily do something stupid. This easily could have been a funny YouTube video had someone caught the baby in time, but this time the results were tragic.

      I feel for this woman. I hope she can forgive herself and they can unite to take care of their other child.

      It sounds like the belt was activated by placing the baby seat on it—like moving sidewalks that don't start up until you step on them. So, the belt was probably not moving when she sat the baby down. Unbelievable nightmare. Poor woman.

    I am sitting here with my hand involuntarily flown up to my mouth in disbelief. This is just so sad. Having traveled more than once with my two small sons, flying to meet their dad, this just breaks my heart to read.

    Horrific. I can imagine this poor woman's screams watching it all happen and being made a useless bystander. Horrific.

    By and by: I see these headlines and think "don't click. don't click. you don't want to know. ignorance is bliss." Fuck my inability to scroll casually by. (I haven't had the stomach to read the 13 shot in Chicago park. But it's coming)

        Idiots. I just can't stand it when people lug their infants around in those carriers like they are baggage. They put them on the floor in public paces. They put them on the ground in parking lots. They carry them through the streets at the exact height of a car's exhaust pipe. Whatever happened to carrying your baby in your arms and treating it like the most precious little thing it is?

          Ummm... maybe because the carriers ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED IN THAT VERY FASHION?

          Don't get me wrong, when my kid was small enough to still be carried in one of those things I treated him like precious cargo, but to state that its bad parenting to place the car seat / carrier on the ground is fucking lunacy. He's in a nearly indestructible car seat for christ's sake.

          Are you a parent? Are you telling me you left your car seat in the car AT ALL TIMES and carried your baby in your arms AT ALL TIMES, somehow juggling groceries, keys, dog on leash, whatever. Bullshit.
