I used to define feminism as the idea that women are equal to men, but then you get the BS about how women are 'equal but different' and therefore should have different expectations.

How about this instead? Feminism is the belief that culturally-assigned gender roles should in no way impact any educational, economic, political, or societal opportunities for anyone.

I like that that definition also includes trans people.

That's another of the issues I've had with the usual definitions for feminism, to be honest.

I don't hate Meghan McCain, I just feel sorry for her for her complete lack of self-awareness and her privilege-blindness. She's just so...so...*sigh*

I blame it on her parents who sheltered her far, far too much.

For example, when she called out Bill Clinton for his infidelity, she got roasted because of what her father did to his first wife. I felt a little sorry for her because I think no one in her family told her how her parents got together and everyone else assumed she knew what we all knew. (Just my speculation because no one would be so brazen if she actually knew the truth in her own life.)

I don't think she ever really had the chance to be a kid, or if she did it was under wraps and away from the real world, which is why you get this constant immaturity undertone to everything she does.

I think her problem is she was never given the chance to be an adult.

My feelings on Meggy changed completely when I read her book, Dirty Sexy Politics. Its not good but I can't pick on her like everyone else. 1) she's harmless compared to a lot of other people that we give platforms too, 2) she at least wants to change the Republican party a bit and I appericate that and 3) hating her is just using another woman as a scapegoat for the Republican party. They want us to spend time hating Meghan McCain (and Palin and Bachman). The GOP love that we spend time on them; it distracts us from the actual problems.

Someone can be a feminist and a Republican. It's not impossible. It just seems painful.

I think it would require a fair deal of masochism, by enjoying to be around people who only agree with you on the issue of taxes, and disagree on oh, everything else.

Gay people, Meghan. Seems like someone needs to work on their rhetorical questions.

Nice to see the white lady is jumping all over and cutting off the only woman of color in that room to explain to her what Feminism is. OFF TO A GREAT START.

i could feel my jaw tighten up in anger.

listen, she agrees that women should have access to everything that men do. duh. but she also has other things she'd like to enlighten your white ass about because feminism isn't just about making sure white women aren't offended by someone calling them a slut. who cares if abortion is legal if poor women can't afford it anyway. who cares if women have the right to vote when states are creating bullshit laws to make it all but impossible for people of colour to vote.

Ana Kasparain covers a myriad of stories about the affordability, lack of abortion clinics and legislation passed against pro choice. In addition, the network she works for, The Young Turks, has done countless stories about voter ID laws and the racism behind it.

I know without context it may seem very black versus white. However with Ana's background and numerous youtube clips available showcasing her viewpoints and knowledge base it is incorrect to think she doesn't understand those issues.

      From the Pivot website:
The series explores topics ranging from Bullying and Feminism to Sex Overload and the Death of Romance, among many other themes.

SEX OVERLOAD Y'ALL. Let me guess, she's finally heard about hookup culture.

Also, I'm going to make my own goddamn TV show about unnecessary capital letter overload.

I've been watching Pivot for several weeks. It's available on DirectTV so to say that no providers are carrying the channel is inaccurate. I'm giving Pivot a chance. They've been airing reruns of Friday Night Lights and my new found love, Farscape. I can also appreciate their taste in cinema (e.g. Syriana, Lars & the Real Girl). Their ads say that McCain's show premieres Sept 14th. I don't care for the girl based on her promos but there's other stuff on the channel I thoroughly enjoy.

Well, honeybunny, I'm sure wasn't trying to be 'accurate,' in that instance; I'm sure she was just making a silly joke, lol. I have TimeWarner and it's buried way the fuck up in the channels I don't go to because they are all about cars and barbecue or some such nonsense. Anyone doing an FNL marathon is alright by me, for real.
