It's indeed asinine to say that blind people should have the right to own guns, for common-sense reasons, and I'm not going to get behind this.

However, what's going to be more asinine is the droves of posts from the folks who want to repeal the 2nd Amendment and completely remove the right to weapon ownership for anyone at all, who are no doubt going to jump on the opportunity to use this (admittedly stupid occurrence) as the latest bit of ammo for their agenda.

I love how wanting not to get shot is an agenda now.

I love how being OK with people having the right to bear arms is "wanting to get shot" now.

Why would a blind person even want a gun?

I'm not snarking... I'm genuinely curious. It's like a deaf person getting an iTunes music gift card for christmas.

To be fair there are by way of some kind of example blind golfers. Helpers line up their shots and lead them to the ball each time. I believe it's similar, but much much much more potentially deadly.

Is there a distinction between carry permits and permits that allow one to own a gun for, say, shooting on a range? I guess I can see the blind doing the latter. "Ok George. A little to the left, no too much. Back a bit. Now up. Up more. A hair more. . . FIRE!!!!!!" But to allow a blind person to carry just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

I believe the answer to your question is "yes."

      From the article:

Private gun ownership by visually disabled Iowans has been around for some time, though granting these residents the right to carry guns in public has only become possible due to gun permit changes that were enacted in Iowa in 2011.

I would assume that they could already head to the shooting range, but couldn't just tote one in public. I truly don't understand why anyone would think someone who can't see well enough to fill out their permit form should be allowed to have a gun in public.

If you view gun ownership as a inalienable right, then we should let them own a gun as they're responsible for their use of that gun. We allow people who may not be able to read very well to vote. I disagree, but that's the libertarian logic.

The Tea Party its different- you see, the Constitution says that voting or free sppech, isn't as important as owning a gun, so it's OK to put restrictions in place to prevent voting or limit speech to certain time, places and manners, but not OK to put restrictions in place to limit who can own a gun. Where is the Constitution say that? Obama is a Kenyan socialist, that's where.

You can get news without reading, but you can't shoot safely without being able to see. We don't give visually impaired people driver's licenses.

"There is a provision in Iowa's law that would let a sheriff deny a gun permit if there was provable cause that the applicant is likely to employ the weapon in a way that could harm endanger herself or others."

Yeah. Like if the applicant is blind!

      That provision is unconstitutional!

The Founding Fathers didn't say guns for the worthy, or guns for the capable. They said guns for everybody right there in the Declaration of Independance.

Do I need vision to fire a gun? HELL NO! Should patients in a persistent vegatative state be armed? Yes. What if God wakes them up and they need to shoot a nurse? No one should stand in the way of that sort of freedom.

It's like people don't even understand what America is anymore.

I live in Iowa, and I am not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand, a blind person with a gun is really only asking for trouble.

On the other hand, is it any worse then a hick with a gun?

    So confused.

Same here, Showbiz 22. Live in the state, and I'm more worried about the hicks acting like vigilantes than I am for the blind having guns, mainly because I know so very few of the latter.
