Ugh. Nic patches did nothing for me. While I'll be the first to admit smoking is a nasty deadly habit, I can't seem to shake it—and I've quit coke, meth, and diet soda. I tried the e-cig thing, and all it did was make me feel like a puppy with a cone-of-shame around my neck.

Kids, don't start smoking. In fact, don't start anything. It all leads to heartbreak and shame.

Part of the problem with e-cigarettes is they aren't cool or socially acceptable so going outside with your black and blue LED gadget is probably the dorkiest drug habit you can possibly have. I'd probably smoke e-cigarettes if I didn't give a shit about that perception.

I'm tickled you wrote coke, meth, and diet soda in the same sentence with regard to addiction.

You quit meth and you can't kick smoking?

This does not give me hope for my pack-a-day brother. But well done quitting all those things.

I hate those things because some smokers think they can smoke anywhere because they aren't REAL cigarettes.

Some hipster fucker was smoking one ON my train on Friday. Slumped in his seat, smoking away, oblivious to everyone glaring at him. If I hadn't been trapped between two other strap hangers, I would have gone over there and throttled him myself.

Yup and as they're not regulated, there's no information on whether or not they emit anything harmful. They should be banned from everywhere you can't smoke real cigarettes. The only safety information out there is what has been provided by the companies.

Isn't the vapor completely odorless and harmless? Why would that bother anyone?

tried doing the switch twice now, just can't get with it.

I've tried two so far; blu just came off as being way too light and I honestly wasn't sure if I was getting any thing out of it half the time. The other was NJoy or something like that, it had the 'harshness' I was looking for, but the flavor was pretty bad and it always gave my throat this weird scratchy feeling.

I know there are other products out there and other methods, but I've been to those 'vapor' forums, and honestly its just too much work. These people make it out to be a hobby and take it too serious, and I'm not interested in that. I don't own a zippo because I don't want to constantly refill it with lighter fluid, I'm not going to buy an ecig and have to constantly fiddle with it and refill it with the nicotine stuff.

I've seen several people with these things. It looks like they're playing tiny, steaming oboes.

That sounds awesome. They should make them capable of being played like musical instruments. I would personally want a clarinet, but oboes are cool, too.

Nic patches made my skin bleed. Ecigs allowed me to kick a 20 year smoking habit. If that's uncool, well, I'd rather be uncool than get cancer.

My problem isn't seeming uncool (I'm inherently uncool—it's what makes me cool). It's the balance on the fingers. I'm always dropping the damned thing.

Yeah avoid things like blu and greensmokes and find a vape store in your area. They can get you set up with a rig and liquid that is right for you.

I didn't realize e-cigs had a reputation for being dorky. I use one, as do several other people in my social circle who are trying to quit. We've gotten congratulations from smokers and non-smokers alike.

I mean, it's entirely possible that strangers are laughing at us, but who cares? I haven't had a cigarette since I started using them. That's good. I'll wean myself off of the e-cig in a few months, too. That's better.

I've been using ecigs for several years and while I don't especially try to call attention to it I've never had anyone condemn or make fun of me.

OTOH when the weather is nice I like to sit outside on my lunch break and vape while I read. Several strangers have gone out of their way to ask me about my experience with them. One of them skeeved me out a bit when she asked if she could try it.

      Your headline is really misleading.

The study found that it's just about as effective as the patch.

      The patch isn't that effective.

Having said all of that, I'm on the patch and am basically now addicted to the patch, but it's better than cigarettes. Plus you have great dreams.

I adore my e-cig. I stopped smoking a while ago, but there are several events in my life where I crave smoking. So I bought an e-cig. It's pink. The crystal on the end glows pink. My breath doesn't stink. I can still hit the gym in the morning and breathe. I don't feel deprived and I get to feel a bit like I'm smoking. Plus, they have Swarovski crystal covered e-cigs that I'm planning on giving to my best friend as part of my plan to coerce her into switching her addiction. It's shiny. She'll like it better than dull white paper cigarettes.

But, of course, I've never been cool anyway. So there's that...

Except for the thing where the cartridges sometimes contain harmful chemicals, or inconsistent levels of listed chemicals and the e-cigs are all manufactured in China with less than stringent health standards.

Don't know where you get your info but it's a little off. Sure much of the hardware is Chinese and so is some of the liquid, but a lot of the liquid is made here in America. Some in peoples kitchens, I'm sure, but some in high quality laboratories. My APV was made in America and all my e-liquid is made right here in San Francisco using certified orgainic, locally sourced ingredients. They only things that were made in China are my panasonic batteries.

They get their info from the Daily Mail. Enough said.
