This also happened in Florida over the weekend:

I think it was probably in response to this. "With one death on his watch during the Crab Festival in April, which was also in the unincorporated area of the county south of Williston, Sheriff McCallum was not about to have egg on his face again."

Of course this doesn't help: "County Commissioner Chad "Cracker" Johnson was unable to attend the surprise meeting, which was not advertised for anyone in the public to attend. He was elsewhere on the Friday of Labor Day weekend."

The second story from the Chronicle is a lot more damning. There's a line where they talk about "the potential for violence." There were dozens, literally DOZENS, of police cars swarming this tiny town on Saturday night.

Bobby McCallum and all of his staff are all white good ol' boys.

This is that "I'm concerned about racist/sexist language when other people are allowed to use it but I'm not" argument. Which is not the same thing as being concerned about racism and sexism.

This douchedick doesn't understand that the whole Paula Deen thing was more than her uttering the word "nigger" some years ago.

But this is just a "concerned American" that thinks racial issues begin and end with "the n-word".

And it's always those with this argument that never took umbrage of "the n-word" when it was uttered from white mouths to describe black people. It's when rappers start saying it is when it's wrong.

I'm still upset that the Paula Deen controversy was downplayed in the media. They focused so much on the fact that she called a black robber a nigger a few decades ago. But she's done and said more horrendous shit than that, and that is why companies dropped her.

Somebody should go in his autocorrect and have it change "concerned American" to "sanctimonious dickbag."

Christopher Cross and Chris De Burgh were fully booked. The Sheriff would have certainly approved of that line up.

The sheriff can kiss my black ass and the college president's black ass. In no way do I believe that this man is truly concerned with the use of the word nigger. He probably uses it in the privacy of his own home. What he's concerned about is the double standard that black people are freely allowed to use it, but white people are condemned for using it, and what he really wishes is for white people to call black people niggers like the good old days. Well that's too bad. Saying nigger is not something white people should be concerned about.

You may be absolutely right, but his point is still valid; and that we continue to give people like this sheriff the opportunity to make it, is on us.

The bigger problem are lyrics like this:

I'm a doing a hundred on the highway
So if you do the speed limit, get the fuck outta my way
I'm D.U.I., hardly ever caught sober
And you abouts to get ran the fuck over

That's not exactly a great message to be sending to drunk college kids.

I used to talk regularly to Mike Scott when I worked as a reporter down in Florida. Kind of an idiot. This is the same clown who made it a point to emphasize Obama's middle name in a speech he gave to warm up the crowd for a Sarah Palin appearance.

The Sheriff was probably also quoted as saying "Why can't we just have minstrel shows like back in the old days. Those were so much more respectful. I am sure that is far from the only university they have ever played at but since this is a black college president in super racist and backwards part of Florida he should know how to shuck and jive appropriately. Plus if I can't use the N word anymore I don't think anyone one else should be able to either."

I dunno. He has a good point. I mean, the story sounds funny at a glance, "white republican upset about black man's rap concert," but he's basically saying that rap culture is part of what is wrong in race relations in America, which is true.

And yes, I had to twice check myself to make sure I wasn't being "Uncle Tom" about this.

You know what's even more wrong about race relations in America? White men in position of power lecturing black men on race relations in America. I'm thinking when we solve the latter issue, the former will just take care of itself.

If you think rap music should be included in a discussion about the problems with race relations in America, you're ridiculous.

That's unfair. It should be a topic . Right after we talk about the 1000000 other elements of race relations that have a more profound effect on society than rap does.
