It takes a nation of millions to elect the corruptMaggie Lange

I love David Lynch. LOVE. I find him to be the best film-maker going and have spent untold dollars and hours on his creative projects. With that being said, every time he talks about "catching the big fish" or discusses any aspect of his understanding of creativity I feel like the Radiator Lady is trying to climb out through my nostrils.

"In heaven, everything is fine. In heaven everything is fine. You got your good thing and I've got mine."

    Maybe.

I want to thank you for posting that picture. Always a welcome sight. I, too, am a massive Lynch fan, but whenever he gets to droning on about transcendental meditation my eyes begin to roll and my right hand starts with the jack-off motions. It was my mother who told me about his little hobby, and her eyes were filled with stars at the thought of it. She showed me a vid of him speaking about it, probably at a TM seminar, and I remember being really disappointed and slightly disturbed. It's always such a bummer when you find out that those who inspire you, and who you admire, are just as silly as Joe Shmo down the road. Also, his name being on that petition for Roman Polanski took him down several notches in my mind. Just goes to show that Rich Weirdos TM exist and thrive whenever success, money and accolades come to pass.

I still love his movies, though. Nothing will ever change that. (love a lot of Polanski stuff, too, incidentally)

Eraserhead is a steaming pile of shit. Why give credit to a series of unconnected images with almost no plot? Any half way decent film student could put something like that together. Of course they wouldn't get any praise until they are marketed as geniuses and people scramble to post pictures of the film so they seem cool.

He has long been a proponent of TM, not sure what here is news, but glad to see meditation in the headline. Transcendental or not, we should all meditate more.

TM is not merely "meditation." It's a cult that will attempt to suck your funds dry. He gave a "free talk" at a local university years ago only to shoehorn this bullshit into his lecture. These are the same dummies who think if we all get a bazillion TM meditators doing Yogic Flying at the same time we can bring about world peace. Fuck you, Lynch.

Damn straight. I was supremely pissed when KPFT, the local Pacifica Radio station in town, started to shill for them during a pledge drive. All that told me is that they accepted a donation form them for some on-air shilling, so they obviously didn't need my money.

TM is such a scam. Sure, millions of Buddhists do just fine meditating with some words that cost them absolutely nothing, but that isn't enough for some narcissists. They need to feel special so they shell out big bucks for someone to come up with a word specifically "designed" for them. I love David Lynch but that doesn't mean he has the smarts to avoid a scam.

Just one link, but there are many more. It's pretty much about people shilling out a lot of money to feel super-duper-special because it gives them something to meditate on. Other religions offer that for free, but not TM. Classic scam which reminds me of Scientology.

Lynch speaks of TM as a TOOL for creativity. For him it is a way to generate ideas. I've heard him speak about it, years ago, and there was not an ounce of dogma involve. Just him sharing how he gets his job done with the help of TM.

If I'm going to pay at the very least a few hundred dollars for a tool it better be able to cut steel and porcelain.

Meditation is awesome and everyone should do it. You don't, however, have to pay out the ass for it. Unless you're rich, there are plenty of free and inexpensive resources online and/or in your local community (I used to go to a local Buddhist temple). They may not have the same sexiness or branding or celebrity endorsements, as TM, but they won't suck your wallet dry.

Seriously. I think people feel like they just HAVE to buy something for it to be legitimate (it's like that college that found that raising tuition prices made it seem more attractive and prestigious). No shame in finding an inexpensive or free ebook and inexpensive or free programs at your local Buddhist or Hindu temple*

*Note I'm not saying that the religions are the same, but I've read helpful meditation texts from both.

I hate it when people say "Be true to yourself".

What the fuck does that mean?

        Go fuck yourself.
