We should be judging the fact that MTV still has the audacity to produce a show with the words "video music."

Really what the VMAs are is the Teen Choice Awards' slutty, edgy older sister. They're just a litmus test for what American youth thinks is cool and an opportunity for pompous assholes to get drunk and wear sunglasses inside and pretend they don't care.

If the VMAs were still about "video music," they'd focus on the videos (which, I guess they KINDA do since your song needs to have had a video to be nominated?), but they ignore an entire fraction of what America listens to (and yes, is honored by videos). See: country music. Oh - sorry - Taylor Swift is "country." But seriously, there were categories like "Song of the Summer!" "Best Song with a Social Message!" How the fuck does that have anything to do with music videos?

I noticed that too; I don't even watch the VMAs anymore, just catch the recaps on Gawker and other sites, and swear they're just making shit up in the category section. It use to be "Best Female/Male Artist Video", "Best New Artist Video" and a few others but now EVERYONE has to win an award so the mold it into a new division of music. If the wanted to give Macklemore an award for his message then say "Hey guys, here's an award for a video with a good social message. Instead of making videos that are obviously trying to be outrageous, maybe you mother fuckers should invest in this sometime."

I love your the "older, slutty sister" analogy. Carry on.

That Miley Cyrus performance was so fucking racist - it wasn't even racist in a cute way. First off, can we talk about how all her backup dancers were black women and they were dressed as teddy bears like they are Miley's toys. What really sent me over the edge was when she whacked that black backup dancer girl's ass. But that wasn't even the worst part. Immediately following she grabs a black girl by the chin, like she's some sort of slave Madam scolding and taunting her. It was disgusting to watch. CAN WHITE PEOPLE PLZ STOP RATCHETIZING EVERYTHING. It's not that cute. The theme of this year's VMA's was cultural appropriation.

Sure I think so. Sarah Silverman does a good job and it's cute and works because she satirizes racism itself.

It might be the sampling rate of the video. But it appears as though she is not saying "fuck". You don't see the distinguished bottom lip disappearing required for producing /f/. She the bright red lipstick creates a great contrast with her skin. When producing /f/, your top teeth bite down on your bottom lips. This is what makes it so easy to notice when people saying "fuck" but you can't hear them. In the gif. and video, it appears that her bottom and top lip come together, which means it is a /p/ or a /b/. But like I said, it is possible that the sample rate is slow and did not capture the moment her teeth bite her bottom lip.

I will say that her own reaction shots to Miley were HILARIOUS. And perfection. I don't like the girl at all, but she was fantastic.

Seriously? Her performance was disturbing... but in no way racist. I'm not sure you really understand what racism is if you think that was racism.

Technically it is relative. White person hires black underlings to work for them. Racist if they are servants, not racist if they are employees treated no differently than any others. Calling everything racism just makes real racism harder to see.

Elvis appropriated black culture, Eminem became popular as a white artist in a generally black genre, not appropriation. See? It's nuanced, so claiming its not is wrong

The VMAs have always been a painfully bad affair with one or two standout moments that don't seem so bad in retrospect. Who can forget the genius of R. Kelly doing Trapped In the Closet all by himself?
