Will she be able to get these hormones in prison? This is what worries me. This sentence is especially cruel if she doesn't have these things available to her.

No. She'll be housed with men, and the only treatment option available will be from military psychologists who are likely to treat her trans nature as a symptom of mental illness.

Could make for a fascinating SCOTUS case?

Jesus, the responses to your question have been transphobic as fuck.

No, she won't be able to get HRT. Hopefully they give her some anti-depressants, because it's going to be a rough 5ish years until the parole hearing.

For the record, assholes, I'd be happy to have my tax dollars go to her HRT, therapy, etc. People deserve appropriate medical care regardless of whether or not they've been convicted of a crime.

Why we gotta be assholes? In my state, I would not normally have to pay for someone else's elective medical procedures. Because manning is in a military/federal institution, I would. I have no problem with him getting the procedure done, I just don't want to pay for it. If you want to pay for it, you should send him a donation.

And the rationale behind denying someone medical care when they are incarcerated is...?

The rationale is by law and regulation the United States military currently does not provide funds for hormone therapy or Transgender reassignment....those VERY LIMITED TAXPAYER funds are currently allocated for people who have had their legs blown off defending America instead.

Not saying that this is wrong or right or weird or otherwise - I am curious and only have one thought:

How much of this might be attributed to PTSD and/or being locked in a closet for 23 hours a day with no human interaction other than yourself and your thoughts?

    Interesting thought exercise.

well, Manning expressed trans tendencies before. Apparently one reason Manning joined the army was to "get over them" or something in that regard. So I doubt solitary caused this. Though the fact that he's Trans could very well have led to solitary as, apparently, that is one way prisons sometimes protect trans inmates from other inmates.

Not her job to compensate for the transphobia of others or to worry about the wider community at this moment.

She's about to be shipped off to a federal prison where she'll be housed with men, denied hormone therapy, and have her trans nature "treated" as a mental illness. If releasing this statement helps her, I'm glad she issued it.

I guess you're right. But as a member of the LGBT community, I always worry about how it's going to play in Peoria.

There is, but there are lots of folks who are backing Chelsea up as well, more than the phobics (so far at least)

Yes indeedy. However, at the time that I wrote my comment, all of them were flat out misgendering.

Hmm. Manning has already been tortured to inform the public about war crimes done in our name. The real question is, what do we owe her?

WHY. ON. EARTH. would you announce this days before being sent to a military prison??? Is she hoping for a transfer to a women's facility? Extra protection?

I mean we should be free to be you and me and all that but in prison you are NOT FREE. And I can't imagine there's a lot of enlightenment about transgender sexuality at Ft. Leavenworth. Honestly, I'm at the point where I don't know whether to call this kid brave or an unbelievably self-destructive glutton for punishment.

    WTF?

Amazing how huge the overlap is between the anti-whistleblower/pro-government crowd and the anti-trans crowds, according to some of these comments...

This disclosure feels...inconvenient. Now my Texas-residing NRA-quoting Christian-defending (despite being Jewish) Palin-abiding brother will have another reason to hate the LGBT community on his facebook page. I don't want him to associate trans people with being "traitors" as he refers to Manning. It's like when Buffalo Bill turned out to be a trans serial killer. There is just not enough acceptance of transgendered people to permit this kind of development yet.

This is not "another reason to hate the LGBT community." It's not Chelsea or the trans* community's problem if bigots are bigots.

        This is not about you.
