I'm not sure why this is surprising. Obviously abuse of power stemming from national security will trickle down to all other law enforcement. Just look at history. Look at recent history and Homeland Security. When the agency was devised, we were told its sole mission was to combat terrorism. Now Homeland Security covers everything from the "War on Drugs" to IP infringement on behalf of corporations. This is why some people are against it on any level. They don't support terrorists or pedophiles, they simply understand what will come.

You have the order reversed here. It was first the war on drugs that was used to turn back the "liberal" justices enforcing the Constitutional protections in the 50's and 60's. It took 2 planes crashing into the twin towers for them to pass The Patriot Act. Funny how that massive bit of legislation was just sitting there, waiting to be passed.

Correct. If you give a government a power, it is only a matter of time before it abuses that power.

If you tie the DEA's hands, who will bust those weed dispenseries who are following the laws of their state and hurting no one?? As a taxpayer, I demand the money stripped from me by the federal government go to putting peaceful people in prison, because that is the AMERICAN way.

While liberal, and a constant supporter of my local dispensaries, it is worth keeping in mind that the argument for them boils down to Nullification. It's worth being wary of the other shit that could open the door to.

Agreed, but it also seems like this country has such a distinct line drawn down political lines that their opinions can no longer be reconciled under a single set of laws anymore. People seem to be resigning to the fact that you can no longer really change things with your vote on a federal level because it's a totally broken machine, and they're getting more involved in local politics. It's a bummer, but I see 30 years down the line, youll move to texas if you want to live in a shootopia of guns and illegal abortions, florida if your hobbies including shooting people and getting away with it, and like, oregon if you want to smoke mad weed and watch cartoons in between shifts as a barista.

So...where are those people now who argued with me about how I shouldn't worry about this because I'm not a terrorist and am a US citizen, so this information wouldn't be used for anything else? Those who said I was wrong to think that any other agency would ever see the information? Well, I'm not a drug dealer either, but now we know other agencies are sharing this information, so...where will it end?

Who could have possibly predicted that secret courts with secret rulings using secret documents under secret orders would ever abuse this power?

But that's alright. Keep up the mantra of "well *I* have nothing to hide, so all this is okay."

First, they came for the terrorists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a terrorist.

Then, they came for the drugs, and I freaked the fuck out.

"It is one thing to create special rules for national security," Gertner said. 'Ordinary crime is entirely different. It sounds like they are phonying up investigations.'"

I could not disagree more with this opinion. The biggest problem with the War on Terror is that the government has created special rules that allow it to circumvent the Constitution any time it decides to slap a "national security" label on a criminal investigation. Under no circumstances should the Constitution ever be bypassed, whether the investigation target is a regular person or a "terrist."

But let's all keep defending Obama, because he's a Democrat and an African American and using wedge issues to keep public support.

There is no half anymore. Politician are just two sides of the same coin. They are not there to help their constituents, only give the allusion they are. They are there to appease their major donors and to feather their own nests. One would think that Obama and his people would have had plenty of time to come up with an affordable health care plan that isn't so confusing. It's confusing for a reason. Do you think it a little strange that Mitch McConnell, since 2005 went from being the 38th wealthiest senator to becoming the 12 wealthiest? Pretty good for someone who has never held a private sector job.

This fundamentally changes how crime is prosecuted. I don't want the government going on a round-the-clock fishing expedition into our lives. This is complete and utter bullshit.

Call your Congressmembers immediately. There are 635 of them and 300 million of us. But they'll think they can get away with anything — and they do — because we don't remind them we're out here. Call your local congressman or woman or email them today and let them know you are pissed. It's the only way to fight actually this.

I wonder how many people in prison under drug offenses are gearing up for an appeal? Because that's what I would be doing.
