"But even longtime reporters were shocked at Ms. Brown’s extravagance in making assignments — one former editor called them “fishing expeditions” — that seemed to belong to an earlier, more flush era of publishing."

Why can't I ever find a job working for some fool like Brown with access to more money than sense? It would have been fun to ride along with her irresponsible spending for a while.

In a sense she just funneled money from a rich guy to writers (taking a hefty cut for herself). So if you were one of the writers lucky enough to get in on that, she was great. In the larger sense of "making a successful self-sustaining publication," not so much.

I eagerly await the "Tina Brown's Career at 50: If She Were Relevant Now" retrospective, where what's left of Newsweek reanimates the long dead corpse that was her credibility and puts it on the cover next to new media.

"Madame Tussauds journalism", where Tina Brown recreates the likelihood of Diana with all the realism and charm of a wax figure.

I've always been fascinated by these people who have the remarkable ability to fail upward. Jeff Zucker also comes to mind.

Pretty sure that no one actually knows what they are doing in most high up media positions. It feels like a lot of these people were lucky enough to be working during an era of prosperity, and then happened to have that same luck move them up the ladder just in time for shit to hit the fan. Now that they're in a position to make decisions during the bad times, they just keep reverting to the same decisions they made at a time when there was no competition from the internet.... which as we know, does not work. But since no one else knows what they're doing at or above that level, these same people keep getting hired to make bad decisions!

The Daily Beast is not "Up" from anything Tina Brown has done since she graduated from Oxford.

Say what you want about Tina Brown, but she is always mindful about paying her writers fairly.

She is the Empress of Failing Upward, but the media has inexplicably fawned over her for years, which is half the reason she got those big positions (the other half being media bosses who actually believe the media). Nice clothes, Empress.
